Slide 1: ==== ==== Important gate wheels wheels information can be found here: http://caster-wheels.net/gate-wheels/ ==== ==== A gate is used for easy entrance in getting from one place to another while it is opened, while at the same time allowing for the division of place while it is closed; especially if you have young children or pets that you do not want to leave your yard, putting up a gate is a good method of making sure that they stay inside whereas strange animals and intruders keep out. Gates are usually constructed out of wood or metal and may be single or double, solid or with spaces in between, be totally sealed or have a see-thru area, and may be as tall as you wish. Gates are not especially costly items but making a gate will even so probably cost less than buying one if you are up for the task; therefore here are a couple tips to help you construct a gate by yourself if you are a D-I-Yer. Required Tools * Pick axe * Hammer * Saw * Screw driver * Required Materials * 4x4 lumber 4 feet long * Cement * 2x3 lumber * Galvanized nails * 1x6 fence boards * T-hinges * Screws * Latch * 1 inch thick strip of wood Instructions Use the 4x4 lumber to make 2 gate posts; with a pick axe dig 2 holes about 2 feet deep and 1 foot wide, set the posts in them and cement them in. For a typical garden gate, space the posts around 3 feet away from each other. This ought to be adequate space for you to effortlessly pass through with your garden tools, wheel barrow, groceries, etc. The gate itself should be a minimum of ½ inch away from the posts on either sides, so if the posts are 3 feet apart (36 inches) the gate should be 35 inches wide. Presuming that the surface beneath the gate is flat, construct a rectangular frame 35 inches wide and about 5 feet in length out of the 2x3 lumber. With the saw cut a 5th piece of the 2x3 lumber and lay it horizontally in the center of the 2 long sides of the frame.
Slide 2: Adjust the frame until the 2 diagonal measurements are the same to be certain that the gate is straight and properly squared. Lay another piece of 2x3 lumber slantwise across the frame, cut it with the saw and nail it into place to brace the gate. Nail the 1x6 fence boards onto the frame so that they are level with the sides of the frame and evenly hang over the top and the bottom of the frame. You may have to cut a piece or 2 in half down the length of it to get it to be level with the gate frame. Now it is time to hang the gate; place the gate between the posts around 2 inches of the ground and with ½ inch on each side and use wedges beneath and to the sides to provisionally hold the gate in position until you secure it to the posts. Screw a t-hinge onto each horizontal piece (the top and bottom boards of the frame and the 3rd piece across the middle) and to one of the gate posts. If the gate opens inward place the hinges on the outside, if it opens out, put the hinges on the outside. Screw the latch to the middle or top of the gate and lastly nail the 1 inch thick strip to the gate post to work as a gate stop. Tips You may make a concrete or wooden bridge just below ground level between the 2 gate posts to prevent them from drooping under the weight of the gate. You may optionally build a header above the gate to prevent sagging. Cut a hole in the gate near the latch so that you may easily access the latch from the outside of the gate.
