Slide 1: The “Impeccable” Akshaye Son of Bollywood actor and politician Vinod Khanna and the younger brother of actor Rahul Khanna, Akshaye Khanna is a critically acclaimed actor known for his impeccable acting style. He made his Bollywood debut in 1997 with the box office disaster ‘Himalay Putra’ . however his next release ‘Border’ in the same year , earned him Filmfare ‘Best Debut’ Award and the nomination for the Filmfare Award for the ‘Best Supporting Actor’ . ‘Border’ grossed over Rs. 60 Cr at the Box Office. Akshaye then gave a string of unsuccessful films such as ‘Mohabbat’ (1997), ‘Kudrat’ (1998), ‘Love You Hamesha’ (1999) etc. However his 1999 release ‘Taal’ became a box office success and Akshaye Khanna’s performance was appreciated even by the critique. Akshaye received Filmfare Award for the ‘Best Supporting Actor’ in the cult classic ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ (2001) in which he did full justice to his role of a sensitive and reserved artist. He also did negative roles in the thrillers ‘Humraaz’ (2002) and ‘Race’ (2008). The best performance of his career came in ‘Gandhi, My Father’ (2007) where he played Mahatma’s son Harilal Gandhi.
Slide 2: Interestingly, to add a feather in his versatility, he also gave his voice in the animation film ‘Delhi Safari’ (yet to release) for the character ‘Alex the Parrot’. A Choreographer is chosen by the Director and Producer to create and coordinate the movement and dance – typically for musicals. Shiamak Davar is one such famous name who has changed the choreography of the Hindi Cinema and is the first Indian to bring contemporary Jazz and western forms of dances through his dance school SDIPA, the first of its kind. Shaimak’s choreography has represented India in various global events like World Economic Forum Davos, Commonwealth Games Melbourne and Delhi etc. He recently choreographed for the movie Mission Impossible 4 with Tom Cruise and others. Farah Khan is another jewel in the Bollywood industry. She has choreographed dance routines for more than 100 songs in over 80 films. Khan trained Shakira for the bollywood version of her song “Hips don’t Lie” for the MTV Video Music Awards on 31st August 2006. She also choreographed Kylie Minogue for the song “Chiggy Wiggy”. Slide 3: You can also get interesting updates from ETC on Facebook and @ETCBollywood The Musical Extravaganza Subhash Ghai, the Director and Producer of ‘Taal’ (1999), once remarked at a press conference, “I credit the name of the movie to composer A.R Rahman. This movie is a romance, I could have called it anything – ‘Dil’, ‘Pyaar’, ‘Hum Bhaag Gaye’, but it was A. R. Rahman’s presence in the movie that gave me the confidence to call it Taal. Taal means music and music means Taal. The whole credit goes to A. R. Rahman and Anand Bakshi.” The soundtrack of ‘Taal’ was such a huge success that its audio rights were sold to TIPS for a then record sum of Rs. 5 Cr and more than 18.5 lakh units were sold within a months release. Though the movie was a moderate success in Bollywood, earning a net gross revenue of over Rs. 17 Cr, it was a huge success overseas. In the U.S, ‘Taal’ became the first Indian Film to reach the top 20 on the “Variety’s” box office list. It also made in the list of the top ten grossing films in the U.K. in 1999. Govinda was the first choice for the role of Anil Kapoor, but somehow it didn’t work out. Also, Mahima Chaudhary was supposed to play the lead female role, but she broke the Mukta Arts three films contract and was subsequently dropped by Subhash Ghai.
