Slide 1: ==== ==== Win a $250 Starbucks Card by just entering!! http://www.facebook.com/pages/StarbucksContest/372678136097847?sk=app_349776408401303 ==== ==== In our last installment, we listed about five (absolutely free) ways to get and max out your presence on Facebook. 'I like it' on steroids is the real goal because it is your fans or clients endorsing you to their friends (or fans and clients). Because I'm a musician, some of my examples may involve specific instances where I've marketed my original music online, but the ideas themselves can be tailored to accommodate a variety of online ventures, including yours! This time we want to break down a particular concept and really show how to max it out. The idea is 'trading likes'. Now before you start scheming and thinking in terms of cheezy gaming schemes when it comes to Facebook, let's explore the legitimacy of simply finding or creating a community and introducing your goods and services to people who have a fan-base that might be interested in what you offer. For instance, since I am a musician and my music is guitar-driven pop and rock with big melodies, I interact with people who run sites that like similar music, people who make music videos, people who make tour shirts and posters, other musicians, etc. Now I don't spam their page with 'Please come like me!' requests. That is not only shallow but counterproductive and goes against established netiquette. What I do is get to know people I really like, whose work I admire, and then offer to help them out by telling my whole audience to visit their page, check out their services and click 'Like'. Then I ask for the same in return. But this is all over a bit of time getting to know the owners of these Facebook fan pages and establishing a legitimate online conversation. That is, I really like their videos or t-shirts, so I talk about them just like I would any friend and ask them how they made them, what projects they have going on, etc. So here is a quick list of ways to really maximize building an online community by building crosspollenated contacts and trading likes: 1. Make a brief list of potential contacts that even remotely relate to your venture and then do a search on Facebook. If you're a wedding planner, cake-makers and photographers will be obvious, but co-opping with an online travel agent will add value when it comes to honeymoon plans and knowing a lot of bands who play weddings can't hurt either. Start a light conversation, get to know the people you feel will be reputable before offering to broadcast their services to your whole Facebook fanlist. Get creative, because even as a rock musician, I've reached out to filmmakers, web developers, marketing experts and the list goes on. 2. If you find yourself short on fans to start with, as many of us do, find potential contacts in that same boat! Seriously. They feel your pain. Offer to create a joint fan-page with a number of these potential partners. They'll appreciate the interest and effort and will likely work as hard as you do to build a joint fanbase. Because I'm a singer, I am--right now--networking with other singers who
Slide 2: could use the exposure and starting a 'Supersingers' fan page combining our talents with hall-offamers like Elvis, Robert Plant, Brad Delp and others. By doing so, I draw attention to all of us and create a great, content-driven fan-page that will only grow over time. 3. If you have video talents and video serves your purposes, create a compilation video using footage and/or images from you and your partner's sites. I have done compilation videos of my own band and the bands of others at festivals. Not only is it fun, creates a great promotional item for everyone in your virtual community to get behind and talk about to everyone they know. If video isn't appropriate, consider an article like this or an online brochure using a flash-based presentation combining content from you and your online community. 4. Create a contest for you and your online partners. Once you have a joint fan page or a joint 'like' campaign on Facebook, let all of your combined fans in on a limited-time contest where each time they actually recommend your page to a friend, they are entered into a contest to win a prize (which could be anything from great information pertaining to your online ventures, or, in my case, an autographed guitar, mp3 players, etc). The beauty of this is, the more times they enter (that is, the more friends they message about how great your page is), the better their chances at winning the contest. This is not only fun and gets you even more likes, but builds great line buzz for your page. 5. Once you have had some success in joint ventures, really talk your methods up with your online partners. Get them excited and encourage them to take on their own joint campaigns (involving you, of course). You will see your efforts absolutely explode! This is just a short list of how to create, grow and max out an online community that trades likes appropriately. As you get into this, you will likely come up with even more unique and ingenious ideas, and we would love to hear about them. In fact, if you're reading this and would like to trade likes, visit the link to my music fanpage below, click 'like' and I'll be happy to drop by yours and do the same and possibly grow both our pages together!
