Slide 1: Krakatoa. Krakatoa was formerly a volcanic island found in the strait between Java and Sumatra.
Slide 2: Krakatoa the Devastation. After the explosion the Island of Krakatoa was in great poverty.
Slide 3: Devastation. There was a lot of devastation after the explosion and people were shell-shocked and very nervous. Think how you would feel after a big explosion, scared, nervous maybe even missing all the people that died and you knew?
Slide 4: The poverty of Krakatoa. After the explosion Krakatoa was in great poverty. All the houses were knocked down and some people even killed. People lost a lot of money and couldn’t buy any food, water and even clothes.
Slide 5: Isolated. This was bad because scientists did not know how ash and lava would travel across water. They thought that this was ok and that the water would protect them if it should erupt. Krakatoa was located in the ocean but only just of the coast of Sumatra.
Slide 6: Krakatoa The explosion. One of the most powerful volcanic explosions in the history of the world occurred at Krakatoa in the last couple of centuries. In May, 1883, a series of eruptions commenced which continued until August 27, 1883, when a cataclysmic explosion blew the island apart.
Slide 7: The power of the explosion. The island exploded with the force of 100 megatons (the Hiroshima bomb was about 20 kilotons). The explosion was heard as far away as Madagascar (2,200 miles). Tsunamis from the explosion were raised to 131 ft, and destroyed 163 villages along the coast of Java and Sumatra.
Slide 8: Amazing facts. Ash from the explosion rose 50 miles in altitude (higher than altitudes where airplanes fly), and it affected the weather for the next year.
Slide 9: Before the explosion. Before the explosion, it was a normal day. The explosion happened late in the afternoon. “so unexpected, so quick, so destructive” said a man who lived the explosion.
