WHAT IS SHARED HOSTING?
Website hosting is very inexpensive, the reason for this is that unless otherwise stated all hosting packages are shared. Shared hosting means that there could be thousands of websites hosted on one single server. The major advantage of this is that costs are shared thus you get your hosting at a very competitive price. Normally there are no problems with a set up like this…. However let’s look at hosting and how it is set up. The hosting company has a server, in order for this server to be online and accessible to all it needs a permanent IP address. This is a unique address assigned to each and every computer connected to the internet. It’s like a phone number – it’s unique and only one computer can have that IP address. The server is set up in such away that even though there are thousands of websites on the one server sharing the same IP address, the server always serves up the right site. We won’t get into the technical details here. It’s just necessary to know that all sites share the same ip address. Now here’s some of the problems: Most websites are fairly passive in nature, that is they are simply displaying simple web pages, they probably don’t get too much traffic and every one is happy. However suppose one or two sites start getting massive amounts of traffic – then what happens? Every one else’s site begins to slow down. You then find that you can’t access your site etc. Worse what happens if one of those sites starts sending out spam email? Well since all the sites are on a shared ip address, this can cause problems – anti spam sites may paint all emails originating from that server as spam! There’s also implications for Search Engine Optimisation – it has been said that if you are say, a site that wishes to be ranked well in Google Canada, then your website should be located on a server located in Canada. If it is located on a server in the US it may not get ranked as high. If you have a small website, which gets an average amount of traffic shared hosting is fine. If not you need to look at either a semi dedicated or dedicated solution.
