Turning 40 is a major milestone, and many people can find it somewhat depressing reaching this age. It is also a time in life when people start to stop trying to maintain their ideal body shape, and many people allow themselves to put on weight. Staying in shape over the age of 40 need not be difficult though. You need to take account of the fact that your body is getting older, and compensate for this. However it does not mean that you are unable to maintain an effective workout regime, all you need to do is ensure that your body is getting everything it needs to operate effectively. For example, people over 40 may need to take a calcium supplement to prevent bone density from reducing. The body is less efficient at producing calcium, and this can lead to osteoporosis. Researching and understanding what the body lacks as it gets older, empowers you to take action and ensure that you supplement your body with everything it needs to help you stay healthy and in good shape. When choosing an exercise regime, try to pick something that you enjoy, or at least something that you can tolerate. This is far better than something which you dislike, and are therefore unlikely to continue. People over 40 often complain that their body is stiffer and takes longer to recover after work outs. This is true, but can easily be avoided by ensuring that you spend extra time stretching before and after every exercise session. If you can avoid the horrible feeling of aching for days, you are more likely to continue your regime, and thus stay in great shape. Staying in shape is not just about diet and exercise. As you get older, you should ensure that you have regular checkups with the doctor. As I mentioned previously, you need to understand and deal with any underlying health issues you have as early as possible in order to stay healthy and in shape. Staying in shape past 40 is not very different from staying in shape at any other age. Understand your body, and stay consistent, and being 40 will make no difference to how good you look.
