Improving your vertical leap is an absolute must if you want to improve your game and really get people to stop and notice your ability. After all, these days the game of basketball is as much about athleticism as it is about skill...so there's no point in spending hours on your ball handling if you're letting your jump training go to pieces. Get better at both and now you're talking about a serious improvement to your game. Improving your vertical is largely a case of developing your fast twitch muscle fibers. These are responsible for the explosive power that you need to generate when you jump and also when you take your first step on a drive through the lane. So, developing these fibers through fast twitch muscle training will help you become unstoppable on the court. The two exercises below are great for developing fast twitch muscle fibers and are based around plyometric training. They are quite intensive on the muscles and joints and therefore you shouldn't do them on back-to-back days. Allow at least one full day's rest between sessions for optimal rest and recuperation. Fast Twitch Muscle Training Exercises Jump Squats The best way to improve your vertical is through practical real-world exercises that utilize the same muscles as you would in a game situation. For this reason jump squats are a superb addition to your fast twitch muscle training routine. Get into a standing position with your feet about a shoulder-width apart, and then lower yourself down into a full squat position. Then burst upwards, jumping as high as possible, making sure to extend your arms upwards to reach as high as possible. When you land, repeat the action. Aim for 10 -15 of these jumps per set, and 2-3 sets per workout. Wall Jumps The second fast twitch muscle training exercise are wall jumps. Instead of using both legs as you did in the previous squats exercise, you'll just be using one leg. Stand side on to the wall and take two steps and on the third step jump as high as possible off one leg, reaching up to touch the wall with your opposite hand (so if you jumped from your right leg, you'll touch the wall with your left hand). When you've completed that jump, immediately turn round and do the same but on the other leg. Do 10 jumps per leg each session. Make sure you keep track of your progress over time and see how you improve. Bonus Tip: Weighted Vest For Extra Resistance As always, the best way to increase strength and performance is through resistance training. The easiest way to do this with fast twitch muscle training exercises, is through the use of a weighted vest or ankle weights (a weighted vest is great because it allows you to adjust the weight as and when you want). Use extra weight on the above exercises and you'll see great results even faster.
