Where you set your affiliate commission will have a big effect on how well you do when trying to recruit affiliate partners and getting them to sell products on your behalf. After all, every potential affiliate partner will need to know they are making money to make it worthwhile for them to mail for your product. But there are different strategies you can use to decide how much that should be. In this article I'm going to present the main commission options and explain why you might consider each of these. The first option is probably the most common, and that's to split any sales between yourself and the affiliate. Nominally, I'd qualify that as a 50% commission rate, although in your case this may be slightly lower or higher. This is a good catch all position to be in for most products, apart from the very cheapest. The reason to exclude the very cheapest, by which I mean products of $7 or below, is that many affiliates won't feel that a share of that is worth their time. Above that, seriously consider a profit sharing agreement similar to the one I've outlined. You might also want to give away all your commission. This would be counted as a commission rate of 100%. Now, this may seem unusual, but actually this can be very effective, particularly when you are delivering a low ticket item where affiliates would be less keen to mail out for you. By giving away 100% you can overcome your objection. You can still profit from this arrangement in two ways. You can make money on the backend product, or any subsequent sales. More importantly, you get to add the name of a buyer to your list; this is very valuable if you understand list mailing. The counter to this is the last option I'm going to explore, which is giving away 0% or a very low figure. Now, this is unusual, but there might be reasons why affiliates would go for this. The main one is if the initial sale is for a low value, but you have a high converting backend which you are offering a larger percentage to your affiliates for. This unconventional strategy can occasionally recruit you partners who wouldn't otherwise have worked with you purely because it is different. Above all, it's important to make sure any rate you are offering is attractive to affiliates and is cost effective for you. That is, if you are offering a service which physically takes you some time to fulfil, you do need to make sure that you are being adequately compensated for your time. Providing that is sorted, you can have success with very low, very high or average commissions. Just price this based around what you need to do to collect affiliates and you can do well from these promotions.
