Slide 2: Overview of the 2008 Paper Sessions • Total number of paper sessions consisting of regular paper sessions (DP), interactive paper sessions (IP), and visual paper sessions (VP): 797 – DP: 588 – IP: 128 – VP: 81 (these sessions were not evaluated because these do not have any assigned volunteers) • 32 chairs/discussants/facilitators filled out evaluations (5% response rate) 2
Slide 3: Session Type Breakdown • Percent of Regular Paper Sessions (DP) on program: 82% • Percent of Regular Paper Session Evaluations: 87% • Percent of Interactive Paper Sessions (IP) on program: 18% • Percent of Interactive Paper Session Evaluations: 13% 3

Slide 6: Advance Withdrawn Papers • Paper sessions with NO advance withdrawn papers: 90% • Paper sessions with ONE advance withdrawn paper: 10% 6
Slide 7: Volunteers’ Preparation vs. Presenters’ Preparation • Percent of volunteers who read the papers in advance of the session: 88% – 6% did not read the papers online – 6% did not know that they can read the papers online • Percent of presenters who were prepared: close to 100% 7
Slide 8: Conclusions • The data from the evaluations didn’t really shed any new lights regarding the paper sessions. They simply re-affirmed some of our long standing believes. In particular the low attendance in these session which I believe is primarily attributable to the fact that there are too many sessions going on at the same time. What did struck me as interesting was that in the majority of these sessions, ALL the presentations were given. I didn’t think that the number (91%) would be that high. In the same breath the number of sessions with NO advance withdrawals is also high especially considering how many times I had to mark a paper as withdrawn in the online program. Perhaps we simply have a very uneven sample. It’s great to see that when the presenters and volunteers do show up for their sessions, they show up prepared. Could this mean that they actually read the email messages that we send to them? Hmmm….. • • 8
