Slide 2: Derived from the Ancient Greek word 'onkos' which means mass, or tumor, Oncology is that branch of medicine that deals with tumors (cancer). It is related to a diagnosis of cancer in a person, therapies like surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and other modalities, follow-up of cancer patients after successful treatment, questions related to cancer care and more.
Slide 3: This field of medicine is defined in three areas of discipline namely medical oncology, radiation oncology and surgical oncology. Medical Oncology deals with the systemic therapy of cancer including chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, targeted therapies, supportive care and bone marrow transplantation.
Slide 4: Radiation Oncology on the other hand is associated with the treatment of cancer by using radiation therapy methods and the study of controlling cancer. Radiation therapy methods help in preventing the cancerous cells from reproducing and can also be used for relieving pain from a tumor by shrinking it.
Slide 5: A radiation oncologist thus, helps cancer patients destroy cancer cells, relieve pain of tumors and also help them to completely get rid of cancer with by using x-rays, electrons and/or gamma rays, and Surgical Oncology is that branch of surgery which focuses on managing cancer by using surgical methods.
Slide 6: Dr. Anil Potti has significantly contributed in a large number of developed programs in lung cancer. He is a reputed clinician from the United States and is known for taking care of patients suffering from cancer.
Slide 7: He attended the Christian Medical College & Hospital, Vellore, India and graduated as a Bachelor in Medicine and Surgery (M.B.B.S) in 1995. Dr. Anil Potti is Board Certified in Medical Oncology.
