Slide 1: infusing your business with sustainability Green is Good Business. “Ecologically responsible business practices result in significant gains for our customers, associates, and shareholders.” – Walmart “Sustainability is on its way to becoming a core part of how businesses think about everything they do” – Andrew Shapiro, GreenOrder
Slide 2: Sustainability……What?  Being sustainable is becoming mainstream and everywhere you turn ‘experts’ offer opininons  There are A LOT of ways to be a better global citizen and steward of the Earth….aka ‘Being Green’  As a sustainable strategy consultant, I have invested hours researching, learning and analyzing the seemingly infinite possibilities….navigating the landscape of options  Here is the big picture and most of the main components, of being a sustainable individual. Sustainability can be defined in two distinct halves:  PERSON – Being sustainable in our personal lives (Residential)  BUSINESS – Being a sustainable business in the marketplace (Commercial) “American companies have a chance to cash in on the shift away from fossil fuels. We're going to have the largest economic transition the world has ever seen.” – Congressman Inslee, House Natural Resources and Energy Commerce Committee © 2009 Killpack Group All Rights Reserved
Slide 3: Sustainable Person  Behaviors – Learning & practicing conservation, recycling and efficiency techniques. Actions like recycling, carpooling, smart shopping, planning & not wasting, composting, reducing your carbon footprint, etc  Structures – Get insulated windows & modernized flooring, controlled thermostats, solar paneling, on demand water heaters, upgraded siding, capture rainwater, plant drought resistant and native landscapes  Operations – this includes eco-safe cleaning products, energy star appliances, water conserving dishwashing & laundry practices, fluorescent light-bulbs, keeping lights off in rooms that are not in use, shutting off computers at night and so on.  Products/Services – This means teaching our children to be stewards of the environment and learning environmentally friendly behaviors from us. It also means buying products & services for our household (like dry-cleaning, housekeepers, painting, etc) that are earthly friendly and safe for our health  Outreach – This includes where you donate money or items, if you do community service for the environment (beach clean-up for example), how you give back to the improvement of the planet. © 2009 Killpack Group All Rights Reserved
Slide 4: Sustainable Business  Behaviors – Learning & practicing conservation, recycling and efficiency techniques. Actions like recycling, carpooling, smart shopping, planning & not wasting, composting, reducing your carbon footprint, etc  Structure – Consider moving into a LEED approved building (meets green building standards) or retro-fitting current commercial space with green features (eco-roof, solar panels, rain capture, natural lighting, etc)  Operations – This includes every aspect of your business operations. Turning machinery off at night, fluorescent blubs, recycling paper/ reducing paper waste, streamlining manufacturing or business processes to be more efficient, electronic document management, employee retraining, sustainable supply chain and more  Products/Services – This requires changing the business dramatically to produce sustainable products (like oil companies investing in geo-thermal or biofuels, or a paint company making low VOC, safe paint instead of the carcinogenic, cheaper kind) or to provide sustainable services (Killpack Group’s green strategy consulting business, or Estco doing sustainable property renovation projects)  Outreach – Supporting environmental causes with corporate matching contributions, volunteerism focusing on sustainable causes and behaviors, involving your company in enviro-friendly political initiatives. Being an active part of the solution, not continuing to ignore the problem © 2009 Killpack Group All Rights Reserved
