Slide 38: 38 Community Information Spanish/English Conversation Group The City of Burien is considering facilitating a Spanish/English conversation group. This would be a weekly get together between native English and native Spanish speakers with the intent for each group to practice and improve their speaking skills in Spanish and English. This could be a great way for residents of Burien to make new friends and build community through language. If you are interested in participating, please contact the Burien Parks and Recreation Department at 206988-3700. National Walk to School Day The Proposed Community Center Update The proposed community recreation center will have to wait a few years. The proposed $35 million facility to replace the old Burien Community Center grew out of public planning efforts over the past year. The Burien City Council recently decided to delay the project for a few years to take advantage of more favorable funding environment in the future. The Council accepted a citizen committee’s recommendations and endorsed the design for the proposed recreation facility. The Council also agreed that timing for a public vote on a bond measure to pay for the project was not optimal in the nearterm future. In other action, the Council: ♦ Decided to relocate current operations of the Burien Community Center and the administrative offices of the Parks & Recreation Department to a better, yet interim home at the Burien Library following the Library’s move to its new location in Town Square; ♦ Allocated resources to support a remodel of the Library and the move of the Community Center’s programs; ♦ Will consider the demolition of the existing Community Center following the relocation in 2010; ♦ Committed to going forward with the recreation center project and a bond measure in 3-5 years when the timing is more favorable; ♦ Will continue site improvements and property acquisition needed for the future community recreation center; ♦ Will consider alternatives to Center demolition in 2010. Join kids and families around the globe to walk and bicycle to school in October! Celebrate Walk to School Day on October 8, 2008 and promote safe walking and bicycling throughout the year. Communities are using the walk or bike to school as the first step to change community culture and create environments that are more inviting for everyone, young and old. Here are some reasons to support walking and biking to school: • To enhance the health of kids. Increased physical activity can combat a host of health problems facing kids today. • To improve air quality and the environment. Replacing car trips to school with walking or bicycling can help reduce air pollution. • To create safer routes for walking and bicycling. Sidewalks, education programs and traffic calming measures are some of the ways to improve conditions.
