I don't have green thumbs at all and I used to think that growing organic vegetables in particular must be really difficult to do. Boy was I wrong! It is so simple to create an organic vegetable garden and I'm going to tell you the basics that I had to learn by trial and error. Tip 1: Search out other local gardeners and farmers who have experience in growing organic vegetables and ask them for their opinion on what grows best in your local area. They will be more than happy to give you some advice so that you don't waste and energy your time planting veggies that will not grow. You might make a knowledgeable new friend and you may even score some free seeds! Tip 2: You are going to be building a square wooden frame that will be 12 inches high and 30 inches in width. This frame will be your raised bed where you will be growing organic vegetables. Now there is no need to get really fancy here, this isn't the New Yankee Workshop! Any old wood will do but if you can get pressure treated wood that's even better as it will resist the elements. I've found that old scaffolding boards on their side work very well for making frames. Tip 3: Now you need to find somewhere to put your bed. Try and keep the bed in a sunny part of your yard. Good drainage for your soil also necessary and if you can keep your bed away from where the kids and dogs usually play then you are in business. Tip 4: Fill the bed with soil and two weeks before you're ready to plant mix in some compost. Home-made compost is best but if your just starting out use a store bought one. Tip 5: Plant out your hardier vegetables like broccoli, potatoes, peas and leeks in early spring when the more severe frost has gone for the year. Plant out more delicate plants like tomatoes, peppers and squash when your sure the frost has completely gone, which is usually in late spring. Tip 6: Once all your veggies are in the ground get down to the local park or wilderness area and collect a couple of garbage sacks of forest debris. This could be dead leaves, tiny pieces of bark or you could even use grass clippings. This will be your mulch. When you get home cover the planting bed with the mulch which will protect the new plants and provide food for them later in the year as it rots down. Tip 7: Make sure you water your plants regularly and don't use any pesticides when you're growing organic vegetables as they will kill any friendly insects like ladybirds. Instead encourage friendly insects by planting some dill in your bed and weed your bed regularly to discourage any pests. Following these tips will produce a nice tasty crop and now you know that growing organic
