Slide 2: Heartsome Europe GmbH www.heartsome.de Installation Installation goes into directory c:/Program Files/Araya. It is recommended not to change this as all initialization files map towards this directory. When the XLIFF Editor is started the first time it adapts the directory names in the various configuration files. 30.07.2009 (c) 2006, 2007, 2008, Heartsome Europe GmbH 2
Slide 3: Heartsome Europe GmbH www.heartsome.de Before the first start… If you have receive a license file you need to copy the license file to the directory „ini“ before you start the XLIFF Editor the first time. Name of the license file: license.<name>.key 30.07.2009 (c) 2006, 2007, 2008, Heartsome Europe GmbH 3

Slide 7: Heartsome Europe GmbH www.heartsome.de Translation Approach Usage of a translation memory model Re-usage of existing translation New translations are stored in TMX format in a database TMX = XML exchange format for translation databases; vendor independent Usage of a phrase translation approach Terms = (words, phrases) are automatically replaced within segments Roughly simulates a word by word translation approach 30.07.2009 (c) 2006, 2007, 2008, Heartsome Europe GmbH 7
Slide 8: Heartsome Europe GmbH www.heartsome.de Segment Translation is done on a segment basis. A segment is either be defined as a sentence or a paragraph. This can be defined by the user (during the document conversion process). Segmentation methods should not be mixed up. For XML paragraph based segmentation is recommended. 30.07.2009 (c) 2006, 2007, 2008, Heartsome Europe GmbH 8

Slide 18: Heartsome Europe GmbH www.heartsome.de Moving Format Information Sometimes it is necessary to move format to another position in the translation. This can simply be done by cut and paste the format information. It has to be remembered that such operation should take into account that the resulting movements should be done in such a way that the format ordering is still valid with regard to the original file format (e.g. XML). This is a <i>Text in italic</i> and this is a<b> text in bold</b> exchanged for test.</segment> </simplexml> 30.07.2009 18 (c) 2006, 2007, 2008, Heartsome Europe GmbH

Slide 46: Heartsome Europe GmbH www.heartsome.de Functionality of the Buttons 1 Entries can be searched using the buttons. Matches are shown in the second list. Text to be searched can be entered in the box above segments. In the above example the text “Waldhör” is contain in there. Search text as segment in the TMX database. Search the database word based Either use “And” or “Or”. This depends on the setting of “Use Or…” box. 30.07.2009 (c) 2006, 2007, 2008, Heartsome Europe GmbH 46
Slide 47: Heartsome Europe GmbH www.heartsome.de Functionality of the Buttons 2 Search using the string „Waldhör“ in the database. The text may appear anywhere in the segment. This button has two functions: a) If the segment text is empty all entries are searched where the format is not correctly stored. Correct format here means that the format is xml valid and not any way incorrect! It does not check the formats between the segments. If a text is specified, a search is performed based on regular expressions. The most import formats for regular expressions are: ab for string ab .* an arbitrarily long string b) . Exactly one arbitrary character .+ an arbitrarily long string of at least length one .? One or no character 30.07.2009 a+ at least one a a? One or no a (c) 2006, 2007, 2008, Heartsome Europe GmbH 47
Slide 48: Heartsome Europe GmbH www.heartsome.de Validating length of TMX entries This function supports plausibility checking of the TMX database entries. It checks the length of the entries and shows all entries where in comparison with the other entries the entry seems to be very short or long. In doing this one can eventually detect entries not correctly translated. Method The character length of all translations for all languages of an entry are determined and the mean computed. Next it is checked if the ratio of the longest and shortest translation outperforms a certain % value. If yes the entry is displayed as to be checked. The percentage value can be set in the eaglememex.properties modifying the property eaglememex.val.prop. The first value (e.g. 14) is the length of the shortest translation, the second value the mean of all translations (e.g. 135), the third value (e.g. 243) the length of the longest translation, the fourth value is the ration of the shortest to the longest translation. 30.07.2009 (c) 2006, 2007, 2008, Heartsome Europe GmbH 48
Slide 49: Heartsome Europe GmbH www.heartsome.de Validation of Entries This function supports plausibility checking of the TMX database entries This function looks up all entries and returns a list of entries where the entry contains more than one translation for a language. Thus double translations can be detected. The first entry contains two English translations. The second one two French translations. 30.07.2009 (c) 2006, 2007, 2008, Heartsome Europe GmbH 49
Slide 50: Heartsome Europe GmbH www.heartsome.de Checking for not translated entries 1 This button supports retrieving entries for which no translation exists for a specific language. First choose a language which should be checked. The language in chosen from “Search Language”. Then push the button. In addition a regular expression can be entered in the segment field. Then only those entries are checked which match the specified regular expression. Only those matching entries are displayed. In this example all entries are displayed which do not contain a French translation. 30.07.2009 (c) 2006, 2007, 2008, Heartsome Europe GmbH 50
Slide 51: Heartsome Europe GmbH www.heartsome.de Checking for not translated entries 1 In this example all entries are search which do not contain a French translation and the text „1“. 30.07.2009 (c) 2006, 2007, 2008, Heartsome Europe GmbH 51
Slide 52: Heartsome Europe GmbH www.heartsome.de Comparing Format of Entries This button searches for entries where the format information differs between the different language translations. Correcting this is important to avoid problems in back conversion. 30.07.2009 (c) 2006, 2007, 2008, Heartsome Europe GmbH 52
Slide 53: Heartsome Europe GmbH www.heartsome.de Searching using Entry ID Using this box an entry can be found based on its internal entry id. The left list box automatically adapts to next matching entry id. The entered ids are stored in the drop down menu. 30.07.2009 (c) 2006, 2007, 2008, Heartsome Europe GmbH 53
Slide 54: Heartsome Europe GmbH www.heartsome.de Right mouse click for Validate Entries etc. Applying a right mouse click to the middle entry list allows to execute some actions. „Remove Entry“ removes all the slected entries from the database. „Select All Entries“ selects all entries. „Export and remove selected Entries“ exports all selected entries into a tmx file in the Araya tmp directory using the database name and adding a unique number. After export all the selected entries are removed from the TMX database. „Export and remove all Entries“ exports all entries into a tmx file in the Araya tmp directory using the database name and adding a unique number. After export all the entries are removed from the TMX database. „Export all Entries“ exports all entries into a tmx file in the Araya tmp directory using the database name and adding a unique number. 30.07.2009 (c) 2006, 2007, 2008, Heartsome Europe GmbH 54
Slide 55: Heartsome Europe GmbH www.heartsome.de Editing a Segment when Modifying a TMX Entry Entries can be modified here. Modified entries are shown with yellow background. Format can only be deleted as a whole, but not be changed otherwise. Changes are saved using “Save Segment” (but this does not store it in the TMX database, “Cancel” closes the dialog without saving. The format of another entry can be copied using a right mouse click. Differences between the (language) entries are marked. Multiple language entries are marked orange. Show Tags allows to show the format information of a segment (toggles between these two views). In this view no editing is possible. 30.07.2009 (c) 2006, 2007, 2008, Heartsome Europe GmbH 55
Slide 56: Heartsome Europe GmbH www.heartsome.de Properties of an Entry The entry properties are shown in a separate window. Only properties in blue can be changed. All other properties are either unchangeable or automatically adapted by Araya. During changing the property color turns to pink, after the change to red. 30.07.2009 (c) 2006, 2007, 2008, Heartsome Europe GmbH 56
Slide 57: Heartsome Europe GmbH www.heartsome.de Splitting Entries These button splits up one entry into two different entries. First select all the segments which should go into a new entry. The press the Split Entry button. The selected segments in the entry are written into a new entry and deleted from the old entry. Function is mainly useful if two entries have been merged and one wants to correct this 30.07.2009 (c) 2006, 2007, 2008, Heartsome Europe GmbH 57

Slide 142: Heartsome Europe GmbH www.heartsome.de Converting Files between different Character Encodings Source file name Target file; will be created based on source file name and as extension the target encoding character set Source encoding character set Target encoding character set This function supports converting files between different character sets. Depending on the target character up to two files are written. If the target file is a UTF-8, 16, 32 or UCS file, two files are written. The second file with the extension „.nobom“ is a copy of the first target file, the only difference is that the BOM (Byte Order Marks) are removed from this file. This file should be used for importing, esp. when an import of an UTF-8 file is done in Araya, as the Java reading functions for UTF-8 does not over read the BOM characters. This could lead to problems when reading normal strings from those file as the BOMs are read as normal characters resulting in invalid entries. (This is a known bug in Java UTF-8 file reading, but will not be corrected by SUN!). 30.07.2009 (c) 2006, 2007, 2008, Heartsome Europe GmbH 142

Slide 150: Heartsome Europe GmbH www.heartsome.de Tracing Modifications in the TMX Database The modification of the TMX database can be saved by setting the property eaglememex.trace.tm=true in the eaglememex.properties file. A “.trc” file is created in the log directory (e.g. trcnew.6_12_2006.trc). The changes are saved on a daily basis. It has to be noted that the protocol of the file is independently of the translator. Only those activities are written, which write something to the database. Read access is not written to the protocol. When importing a TMX file the function is disabled. For each modification the modifying author and the date of the change is added as a trace line. In addition the type of change as well as the involved entries (its IS) klemens.waldhoer: 8.12.2006 8:33:18,953: M12:collapse:>10f60fa594c_klemens_waldhoer 30.07.2009 (c) 2006, 2007, 2008, Heartsome Europe GmbH 150
