Slide 2: U.S. to roll out major broadband policy Sun Mar 14, 10:05 am ET WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. regulators will announce a major Internet policy this week to revolutionize how Americans communicate and play, proposing a dramatic increase in broadband speeds that could let people download a high-definition film in minutes instead of hours. Dramatically increasing Internet speeds to 25 times the current average is one of the myriad goals to be unveiled in the National Broadband Plan by the the Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday. The highly anticipated plan will make a series of recommendations to Congress and is aimed at spurring the ever-changing communications industry to bring more and faster online services to Americans as they increasingly turn to the Internet to communicate, pay monthly bills, make travel plans and be entertained by movies and music. "This is a fairly unique event," said Paul Gallant, an analyst with Concept Capital. "The FCC really has never been asked to design a broad regulatory shift like this. Broadband is important and difficult because it threatens every established communications sector." Some details of the plan have trickled out in the last few weeks including how to find spectrum to meet an anticipated explosion of handset devices capable of playing movies and music in addition to handling emails and voice calls. But some carriers like AT&T Inc and Qwest Communications International Inc were irked last month when the agency's chief, Julius Genachowski, announced that the FCC would propose in the plan a goal of 100 Mbps speeds to be in place at 100 million American homes in 10 years. The current average is less than 4 Mbps. In a sign of tension between the FCC and carriers, Qwest called it "a dream" and AT&T reacted by saying the FCC should resist calls for "extreme forms of regulation." Since the FCC announcement, Cisco Systems Inc announced it would introduce a router that can handle Internet traffic up to 12 times faster than rival products. Google Inc has also gotten in on the hype, saying it plans to build a super-fast Internet network to show that it can be done. The FCC has praised both announcements.
Slide 3: March 16, 2010 5:13 PM National Debt Up $2 Trillion on Obama's Watch The latest posting from the Treasury Department shows the National Debt has increased over $2 trillion since President Obama took office. The debt now stands at $12.6 trillion. On the day Mr. Obama took office it was $10.6 trillion. President George W. Bush still holds the record for the most debt run up on his watch: $4.9 trillion. But it took him over four years to rack up the first two trillion dollars in debt. It has taken Mr. Obama 421 days. But the Obama Administration routinely blames the Bush Administration for inheriting a budget surplus and turning it into years of record-breaking deficits and debt -- and then leaving it on the doorstep of the new president.
Slide 4: March 15, 2010 Da Vinci ‘predicted world would end in 4006’ says Vatican researcher A date for your diary: Leonardo da Vinci predicted that the world would end on November 1, 4006, according to a Vatican researcher. Sabrina Sforza Galitzia said the clues were to be found in da Vinci’s Last Supper mural. The central half-moon window, or lunette, above his painting of Christ with his disciples before the Crucifixion contains a “mathematical and astrological” puzzle which she has deciphered, she said. She claimed to have worked out that da Vinci foresaw the end of the world in a “universal flood” which would begin on March 21, 4006 and end on November 1 the same year. Documents showed that he believed that this would mark “a new start for humanity”, Ms Sforza Galitzia said. Ms Sforza Galitzia, who formerly studied da Vinci manuscripts as a researcher at the University of California in Los Angeles, now works in the Vatican archives. Last year, the Vatican published her study The Last Supper of Leonardo in the Vatican, in which she examined a tapestry of the Last Supper made for King Louis XIII of France, based on da Vinci’s design for his famous mural in Milan. She said she was working on a sequel which would explain da Vinci’s hidden “code”, involving signs of the zodiac and his use of the 24 letters of the Latin alphabet to represent the 24 hours of the day. Da Vinci had seen the story of humanity as leading to “the sum of all things, the final reckoning” described in the Book of Revelations but also by ancient writers such as Plato and Aristotle, she told La Repubblica, an Italian newspaper. He had been a scientist and man of faith who had lived in “difficult times” and had hidden his messages “so as not to be attacked,” she said. The Last Supper, which measures 460cm by 880cm (15ft by 29ft), covers an entire wall at the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan. Da Vinci began working on it in 1495, and finished it in 1498. It was restored between 1978 and 1999 after it had badly deteriorated.
Slide 5: Pair faces jail time in Dubai over kiss Mon Mar 15, 2010 DUBAI (Reuters) – A British pair caught kissing in public in Dubai face up to a month in jail in the Gulf Arab emirate for indecency after an Emirati mother complained her child had seen their indiscretion. The pair, a British man living in Dubai and a female friend, were arrested in November on accusations of kissing and touching each other intimately in public and consuming alcohol, their lawyer said. They were ordered jailed for a month. The case is the third time in under two years in which Britons have hit the headlines by falling foul of decency laws in Dubai, a flashy Muslim emirate popular with sun-seeking Western tourists and expatriates. A lawyer for the pair, who launched an appeal on Sunday, said there had been no inappropriate kissing and the two were just friends. A verdict in the appeal is expected on April 4. "There was no lip kissing. It was just a normal greeting that is not considered offensive," lawyer Khalaf al-Hosani told the court, adding the complainant's testimony was contradictory. The pair, free on bail, were also fined 1,000 dirhams ($272) for illegal consumption of alcohol, the lawyer said. They were to be deported after the completion of their jail sentence. Dubai's foreign population has expanded rapidly in recent years as expatriates flocked to the Gulf Arab trade and tourism hub for its taxfree earnings and year-round sunshine. The changes have challenged the Emirati population, which is now vastly outnumbered by foreigners, raising concern that their emirate's rapid pace of growth is a threat to their social and religious identity in what remains a deeply conservative region. In a high-profile case in 2008, a British couple narrowly escaped jail after a court found them guilty of engaging in drunken sexual activity out of wedlock, and for doing so in public on a beach in the emirate. They were sentenced to three months in prison followed by deportation, but had their jail terms overturned on appeal. In a separate case this year, a British couple who shared a hotel room managed to escape trial in Dubai for having sex out of wedlock by producing a marriage certificate.
Slide 6: March 18th, 2010 CNN 'Shaming' her in-laws costs 19 year old her nose, ears "When they cut off my nose and ears, I passed out," 19-year-old Bibi Aisha of Afghanistan says with chilling candor. Her beauty is still stunning and her confidence inspiring. It takes a moment for the barbaric act committed against her to register in your mind and sight. Wearing her patterned scarf and with roughly painted nails she shares her story. "It felt like there was cold water in my nose, I opened my eyes and I couldn't even see because of all the blood," she remembers. It was an act of Taliban justice for the crime of shaming her husband's family. This story began when Aisha was just 8 years old. Her father had promised her hand in marriage, along with that of her baby sister's, to another family in a practice called "baad." "Baad" in Pashtunwali, the law of the Pashtuns, is a way to settle a dispute between rival families. At 16, she was handed over to her husband's father and 10 brothers, who she claims were all members of the Taliban in Oruzgan province. Aisha didn't even meet her husband because he was off fighting in Pakistan. "I spent two years with them and became a prisoner," she says. Tortured and abused, she couldn't take it any longer and decided to run away. Two female neighbors promising to help took her to Kandahar province. But this was just another act of deception. When they arrived to Kandahar her female companions tried to sell Aisha to another man. All three women were stopped by the police and imprisoned. Aisha was locked up because she was a runaway. And although running away is not a crime, in places throughout Afghanistan it is treated as one if you are a woman. A three-year sentence was reduced to five months when President Hamid Karzai pardoned Aisha. But eventually her father-in-law found her and took her back home. That was the first time she met her husband. He came home from Pakistan to take her to Taliban court for dishonoring his family and bringing them shame. The court ruled that her nose and ears must be cut off. An act carried out by her husband in the mountains of Oruzgan where they left her to die. But she survived.

Slide 8: Forget Taxing Marijuana; The Real Money's In Cocaine March 18, 2010 A Harvard economist has estimated how much money states would raise by legalizing and taxing marijuana and cocaine. In a podcast a while back, Harvard's Jeffrey Miron told us that his estimates for what California would bring in from taxing marijuana are much smaller than some of the numbers that are floating around out there (including a $1.4 billion estimate from state officials). Since that interview, Miron has come out with a paper estimating, among other things, potential tax revenues from cocaine and marijuana. It turns out the big tax money is in cocaine. Sure, legalizing marijuana is highly unlikely and legalizing cocaine isn't even on the table in mainstream politics. Still, it's interesting to know what the numbers would be -- particularly when they're coming from a Harvard economist. On top of state revenues, Miron estimates that a federal taxes would amount to $4.28 billion for marijuana and $12.47 billion for cocaine. Miron figures taxes on the drugs would be comparable to taxes on alcohol and tobacco. His estimates for how many people in each state use marijuana and cocaine are based on a government survey. (He notes that the number of users would likely rise if the drugs were legalized, but his estimates don't account for this.) He estimates that if marijuana and cocaine were legalized, their prices would fall by 50% and 80%, respectively. The research was funded by the Criminal Justice Policy Foundation; here's the foundation's take on drug policy.
Slide 9: Cocaine Blamed for Global Warming News Tue., Mar. 16 2010 Those of us who like to "ski" might be making it harder for those of us who want to, you know, actually ski. Apparently, members of the British Parliament are now blaming cocaine production for contributing to global warming. That's because in order to grow the cocoa plant, coke producers in Colombia have to knock out trees in the already struggling rain forest. "We were horrified to learn for every few lines of cocaine snorted in a London club, four square metres of rain forest is destroyed," British politican Kieth Vaz said, according to the Mirror. Jeez, who knows how many acres of rain forest Kate Moss has personally destroyed. Let's not even think about all the poor sloths and cocks-of-the-rock that have been killed in order to fuel South Beach. "Models who wouldn't dare to wear a tiger fur coat show no qualms about flaunting their cocaine use," Vaz continues. (Honestly, though, we're not sure Moss would have many qualms about wearing a tiger fur coat. Preferably snow tiger -- the coke residue shows less.) Vaz's argument makes sense on some level, but we have no idea to what degree the cocaine trade contributes to global warming. We called Al Gore, but he was busy. Maybe he's teaming up with Nancy Reagan for some "Just Say No" and Inconvenient Truth cross-promotion. Though it would be ironic if the same drug that, let's be honest, has quite a history in Miami contributes to the force that might one day put the town underwater.
Slide 10: World’s Richest Men Do Not Know What Crisis Is 12.03.2010 Pravda.Ru The number of dollar billionaires in the world has exceeded 1,000 people. The richest man in the world today is Carlos Slim, a Mexican media tycoon, Forbes magazine wrote this week. Slim’s fortune is evaluated at $53.5 billion. The total capital of 10 richest people in the world has grown to $342 billion over one year. A year ago, the index made up $254 billion - $3.5 billion for each person on the list, which marked a $500 million increase in comparison with the previous year. The total number of members of the billionaire club increased too – from 793 to 1011. It just so happens that there is no crisis on top of the world. Only 12 percent of billionaires became “poorer” in 2009. The number of female billionaires has grown too – from 72 to 89.
Slide 12: Wizard of Oz set for 3-D remake The Wizard of Oz is to be remade for the 21st century, with 3-D special effects and a very modern Dorothy. Telegraph.co.uk 10 Mar 2010 Inspired by the box office success of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, executives at Warner Bros are pressing ahead with an update of the childhood classic. The studio is weighing up two rival projects which take Frank Baum's original story as their starting point, and will be very different from the 1939 film starring Judy Garland. The first is Oz, produced by the team behind the Twilight franchise and aimed at the teen market. The second, as-yet-untitled film has a darker tone and moves the action closer to the present day, with Dorothy's granddaughter returning to Oz to fight the forces of evil. The script has been written by Josh Olson, whose previous credits include David Cronenberg's A History of Violence.
Slide 13: This 1-Year-Old Happy Meal Has Aged Surprisingly Well March 17, 2010 Have you ever wondered what a McDonald's Happy Meal looks like after it's sat on a shelf (not in a freezer) for a year? This seems like one of those things I would learn accidentally, but writer Nonna Joann Bruso decided to find out on purpose. The results? Not as disgusting as you might think, which itself is sort of disgusting. It smelled delicious for a few days. I’d get a whiff of those yummy French fries every time I walked into my office. After a week or so, you could hardly smell it. My husband worried that when the food began to decompose, there would be a terrible odor in our home. He also worried the food would attract ants and mice. He questioned my sanity. NOPE, no worries at all. My Happy Meal is one year old today and it looks pretty good. It NEVER smelled bad. The food did NOT decompose. It did NOT get moldy, at all.
Slide 14: RoboPlow takes charge against all things snow Mar 8 2010 In chilling winters, all you can do is just to peep out from you windowpanes to get the sky clean so that you can shove off your courtyard. Remember, you just can’t fight against the Mother Nature. This saying, however, seems to change with this RoboPlow that helps you clean all that mess after the snowfall. Yes, this RoboPlow is amazing when its slices through snow banks. And in order have its work through; the RoboPlow sports a 50″ blade, six wheel drive, and a bad attitude when it comes to all things snow. To save you from bitter cold and that strain in your lower back, RoboPlow is equipped with 660 of AMPS power, on board rotatable camera, on board charging, has ten watt led to facilitate night plowing, and fully pneumatic control for left, right, up and down movements.
Slide 15: What’s Really in Your Food? Men's Health What’s in a Chicken McNugget? You’d think that a breaded lump of chicken would be pretty simple. Mostly, it would contain bread and chicken. But the McNugget and its peers at other fast-food restaurants are much more complicated creatures than that. The “meat” in the McNugget alone contains seven ingredients, some of which are made up of yet more ingredients. (Nope, it’s not just chicken. It’s also such nonchicken-related stuff as water, wheat starch, dextrose, safflower oil, and sodium phosphates.) The “meat” also contains something called “autolyzed yeast extract.” Then add another 20 ingredients that make up the breading, and you have the industrial chemical—we mean, fast-food meal—called the McNugget. Still, McDonald’s is practically all-natural compared to Wendy’s Chicken Nuggets, with 30 ingredients, and Burger King Chicken Fries, with a whopping 35 ingredients. For more fast foods to watch out for, memorize this list of the 20 Worst Drive-Thru Foods. What’s in a Filet-O-Fish? The world’s most famous fish sandwich begins as one of the ocean’s ugliest creatures. Filet-O-Fish, like many of the fish patties used by fast-food chains, is made predominantly from hoki, a gnarly, crazy-eyed fish found in the cold waters off the coast of New Zealand. In the past, McDonald’s has purchased up to 15 million pounds of hoki a year, each flaky fillet destined for a coat of batter, a bath of oil, a squirt of tartar, and a final resting place in a warm, squishy bun. But it seems the world’s appetite for this and other fried-fish sandwiches has proved too voracious, as New Zealand has been forced to cut the allowable catch over the years in order to keep the hoki population from collapsing. Don’t expect McDonald’s to scale down Filet-O-Fish output anytime soon, though; other whitefish like Alaskan pollock will likely fill in the gaps left by the hoki downturn. After all, once it’s battered and fried, do you really think you’ll know the difference?
Slide 16: Hustler loses bid for crime scene photos Published: March. 11, 2010 at 3:46 PM DECATUR, Ga., March 11 (UPI) -- A Georgia judge blocked the release of crime scene pictures of a woman's nude, decapitated body to Hustler magazine. Hustler's effort to obtain pictures of Meredith Emerson, 24, a University of Georgia graduate abducted while hiking and killed in January 2008, outraged lawmakers and the woman's family. DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Dan Coursey Wednesday ruled release of the photos could cause irreparable harm in response to a suit filed by Emerson's family, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. It followed a legislative committee's approval of a measure that would have prevented the pictures from being released through the state's public disclosure law. "The death scene photographs are some of the most graphic and horrible photographs I've ever seen in my 37 years in law enforcement," Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Vernon Keenan said.
Slide 17: Man's chin swells to size of ball Wed Mar 17 2010 A Chinese man says he has not left his home for five years because his chin has swollen to the size of a small basketball. Chang Du's tumour began as a small bump which continued to grow "bigger and bigger" despite medication from a local doctor. The 71-year-old says his family cannot afford a $7900 operation which would see his entire lower jaw removed. "I didn't go to the hospital due to poverty," Chang said.

Slide 19: Live Oak school worker arrested for alleged sex act with student March 17, 2010 LIVE OAK, CA - A Live Oak school district librarian and health aide faces child molestation charges after an alleged sexual act with an underage student. Sharon Janelle Souza of Live Oak was arraigned Tuesday in Sutter County Superior Court on a felony charge of lewd acts on a child and misdemeanor child molestation. Souza, 43, was arrested Monday in connection with the alleged acts that happened last December, Sutter County Sheriff's spokeswoman Brenda Baker. Baker said Sutter County investigators were looking into whether there were other victims in the case. Souza worked first as a librarian aide, then as a health aide with the Live Oak Unified School District, district director of special programs Meschelle Righero said. Righero said Souza was placed on paid administrative leave when the allegations came to light. A preliminary hearing on the charges against Souza was scheduled for March 26. She declined a request for an interview. News10/KXTV
Slide 20: Man used penis to assault female police officer A man who assaulted a female police officer with his penis has been fined. Marium Varinauskas, 28, tried to strike the officer on the head with his penis when she was called out to his flat, but she got out of the way. Lithuanian Varinauskas admitted a charge of assault at Aberdeen Sheriff Court and was fined £600. The court heard he had been drinking heavily and could not remember committing the offence at his home in Aberdeen. Police were called to his home by his girlfriend, who had complained about him being drunk last November. They arrived to find the selfemployed engineer sitting on the sofa wearing a pair of underpants. Fiscal depute Elaine Lynch said: "The accused got to his feet and was standing over the police officer exposing his penis and thrusting it in her face, forcing her to take evasive action to avoid getting struck." Defence solicitor John Hardie said: "He was sitting on the couch drunk with his pants on. "He can't remember anything but accepts that if that's what the police say then that's what happened. "He has never been so drunk before that day and accepts he has to take full responsibility. He apologises profusely and is extremely embarrassed." His not guilty plea to committing a breach of the peace by uttering offensive and sexual remarks was accepted by the Crown. Sheriff Annella Cowan was told that the Lithuanian had now quit binge drinking because of the incident.
Slide 22: Dutch Nurses Union Campaigns for Care with No Sex 12 March 2010 5 A Dutch nurses’ union is making a statement that health care does not include sexual services as demanded by some patients. The union, named NU’91, will name the campaign as “I Draw The Line Here”. They will be using an advertisement featuring a female nurse covering her face with her crossed hands. It all started when a 24 year old nurse refused to give sexual gratification to a 42 year old disabled man who demanded it as part of her home health care services. The nurse filed her complaint last week. The nurse reported that she saw other nurses having sexual activities with the man. When she refused, he asked that she be dismissed on the grounds of being not fit to provide care. “This type of action is not part of the job responsibilities of carers and nurses,” the union said. The union added that the case has already been reported to the police.
Slide 24: Sex? Read my lips Published: 15 Mar 2010 A NEW lipstick has gone on sale that shows when women are in the mood for sex. The saucy slap changes from clear to deep crimson as the wearer feels frisky. It works by reacting with a girl's body chemistry. And each £12 tube comes with a colour chart so men can work out how randy their partner is feeling. The Mood Swing Emotionally Activated Lip Gloss was invented in California. A spokesman for makers Too Faced said: "The colours change depending on your emotional state." Celeb fans include singer Katy Perry, engaged to randy funnyman Russell Brand. Dating expert Lorraine Adams said: "This is the ultimate date ice-breaker. "But using it every day could get embarrassing. Would you really want the man next to you on the bus to know if you're turned on?" The lippy is available at Boots and ASOS.com.
Slide 25: Loud sex enough for cops to search your home, court rules Tuesday, March 16th, 2010 For Brian McGacken of Farmingdale, New Jersey, an evening of loud sex resulted in a 10-year prison sentence for growing marijuana. On Feb. 17, 2007, New Jersey state troopers arrived at McGacken's home, responding to an anonymous 911 call complaining of screams coming from McGacken's home. McGacken explained the noise was a bout of loud sex; his girlfriend appeared at the front door and corroborated his claim. But officers searched his home anyway, and found enough marijuana -- including potted plants -- to put him away for 10 years on charges of producing a controlled substance. Appealing the conviction, McGacken argued that, once police knew the noise was consensual sex, they no longer had reason to search his home. But the appellate panel at the Superior Court of New Jersey disagreed. On Monday, they dismissed McGacken's appeal, stating that "the potential for harm was too severe for the police to accept an explanation for loud screaming that could have been a cover-up of its true source."
Slide 27: Actress promotes head boobs 11 Mar 2010 AN Oscar-winning actress has appeared in a spoof advert poking fun at men's fascination with staring at women's boobs. MARION COTILLARD, who won Best Actress for 2007 movie La Vie en Rose, promotes Forehead Tiatties - a device designed to divert male eyes away from ladies' chests. The French actress begins the advert, which was posted on website FunnyorDie.com, by saying women in America deal with "sexual objectification whereever they go - especially in the workplace". She then introduces "France's best kept secret" - the Forehead Tiattes by Jena - and promptly dons the plastic forehead boobs.
Slide 28: Thursday, Mar. 11 2010 Same Crap, Different County: Another Small Texas Town Overpunishes Another Piddly Drug Offender In a case one local defense attorney has said showed "shades of Tulia," a Bay City man was sentenced to 60 years in prison for possessing 1.3 grams of crack. Melvin Johnson III, 35, was convicted of possession with intent to deliver in January at the Matagorda County Courthouse. His sentencing was held amid very tight security -- Johnson was shackled and extra deputies were brought in to conduct Johnson to and from the courtroom. According to the Bay City Tribune, observers feared violence because Johnson had refused to place his thumbprint on his judgment of guilt the court had entered an hour before. At his trial, assistant DA Carla Post seemingly attempted to portray Johnson as the crack kingpin of Bay City. Under her direct examination, a Matagorda County sheriff told the court how his department had kept Johnson's alleged crack-peddling operation under surveillance and had acted on "the covert assistance of local citizens" in building their case. Using that information, they approached a local magistrate who signed a warrant. Three days after the warrant was signed, Johnson's home was stormed by a SWAT team as Johnson's teenaged son played basketball in the driveway. The Matagorda County cops explained the delay between the signing of the warrant and its execution on their needing time to bring in the SWAT team -- Johnson does have a felony conviction for retaliation on his record. After scouring the house, they found two crack-rocks weighing a total of 1.3 grams in the pocket of a jacket hanging on the door. That little pocketful of stones got Johnson six decades in TDCJ. (It bears mention that a United States dime weighs 2.2 grams. Crack kingpin Johnson was found to be in possession of one-half of a dime's weight in cocaine.)
Slide 30: Drunk, high dad leaves baby in oven overnight, police say CNN March 16, 2010 9:58 p.m. EDT (CNN) -- A Kentucky man high on marijuana and drunk on whiskey put his 5-week-old son in the oven Sunday and left him there overnight, police said. The oven door was slightly ajar, and the oven was not turned on. After smoking marijuana at the restaurant where he works as a cook, Larry Long, 33, returned home to share a fifth of whiskey with the baby's mother, Brandy Hatton, McCracken County Sheriff Jon Hayden said in a statement. Hatton had four or five shots and went to bed while Long finished the bottle, Hayden said. At 5:30 the next morning, Hatton awoke to the sound of the baby's cries coming from the oven. He had been in it for several hours, police said. Emergency crews responding to the scene transported the infant to a local hospital, where he was found to be unharmed. The incident was reported to authorities by a psychiatric facility that Long turned to when he learned what he had done, officials said. "He actually called a mental health crisis line immediately thereafter and told them that he had done this. And they contacted us," Hayden said. Police arrested Long and charged him with first degree wanton endangerment. He is being held on bail of $10,000. Long blamed his actions on the marijuana, which he believes was laced with a hallucinatory agent, officials said. Authorities have removed the baby from its mother's care and awarded emergency custody to members of her family.
Slide 31: Police: Woman hit sister with toilet lid March 15, 2010 Police arrested an Iowa City woman after she allegedly struck her sister with the lid of a toilet tank. Nitasha Camilla Johnson, 20, of 2401 Highway 6 E. No. 3805, was arrested at 3:57 a.m. Sunday. She is charged with domestic abuse assault without causing injury and interference with official acts. Johnson's sister and her sister's husband told police that Johnson, who had been living with them for the past two months, removed the toilet tank lid and struck the her sister during an altercation. Police said they found the sister lying on the floor bleeding from her foot. She also had an injury to one of her fingers. Johnson was in the Johnson County Jail on Sunday night on $1,500 cash-only bond.
Slide 32: Former UC player Robert Whaley arrested March 12th, 2010 Robert Whaley, who played 22 games with the Bearcats during the 2003-04 season, was arrested Thursday in Salt Lake after police found marijuana between his buttocks, according to a report published in the Salt Lake Tribune. Whaley was given a citation by police at 4:30 a.m. Thursday for not wearing his seat belt. According to the report, Whaley had warrants for his arrest for absconding from a probation in Michigan. Whaley made matters worse by identifying himself as Kareem Johnson (also the name of a former teammate of Whaley’s at Cincinnati). Soon after, detectives found the marijuana. Controversy and arrests have followed Whaley throughout his career. A statutory rape charge when he was in high school and battery charges as a junior-college player followed Whaley, labeling him as a risky recruit or draft choice. He avoided a conviction in the statutory rape case with a mistrial in 2001, and he received probation in a plea bargain on two aggravated battery charges in 2003 that were reduced from felonies to misdemeanors. His problems grew, however, when he arrived at Cincinnati in 2003 from Barton County (Kan.) Community College. Whaley quit the UC team midway through the season, then returned and eventually was dismissed for academic reasons, an explanation which Whaley disputes. “I thought I was going to go to the NBA out of (junior college), but things happened and I couldn’t do it,” he said in a 2005 interview. “(Following the 2003-04 season), I didn’t leave Cincinnati or anything like that, Cincinnati kind of left me. Coach (Bob Huggins) called me in and just told me that it would be in my best interest if I went to another school. I asked him why, and he was telling me: ‘It’s pretty much above your head. I don’t think they want you here, and if you do anything, you might jeopardize your whole career.’ He said, ‘You’re talented, so you’ll be seen anywhere.’ I asked him what I should do, and I took his advice and just ran with it.” Still, Whaley made it to the NBA, as a second round draft pick by the Utah Jazz in 2005. He appeared in 23 games for the team the following season. His career fizzled and soon after he was out of the league. According to the report, Whaley was convicted in 2008 for maintaining a drug house in Michigan.
