Insomnia causes more than just a loss of sleep. The lack of rest brings a host of other problems both physical and mental to your life and is not something that can go unaddressed for long. However, many people pursue treatments that are more of a shot in the dark rather than tailored for the specific cause itself. That doesn't make for a long term solution. While determining the causes of insomnia is not always easy, it is crucial. Insomnia is not something to treat blindly, it requires some detective work by both the sufferer and the doctor assisting them. Unfortunately, people all too often want the quick answer or treatment so millions of people opt for drugs. Whether they are over the counter or prescription, neither one is good for more than perhaps a temporary period of time. The side effects are too serious and the potential for addiction and abuse is huge. The worst part about the rampant use of drugs to treat insomnia causes is that it really doesn't treat causes. It's a bit like cold medicine....it deals with symptoms but not the disease itself. Sleep medication deals with the symptom of a lack of sleep, but does nothing to cure what is behind the sleeplessness to begin with. Unfortunately, unlike a cold, many cases of insomnia don't just get better over time. Modern research into sleep and the causes of insomnia is starting to show that drugs do not have benefit beyond a short term band-aid to help someone get rest while they may be dealing with a short term form of insomnia. Using drugs to treat long term insomnia is not as helpful. Experts have found that for long term results lifestyle changes and therapy tend to address root causes more effectively and with more lasting results. However, that takes time and effort which many are not willing or in some cases perhaps able to do. Insomnia causes are best addressed by lifestyle changes and therapy because the root causes tend to be stress from work/home, diet, lack of exercise, past trauma or issues, chemical imbalances in the brain, etc. These have to be dealt with or they will continue to affect your sleep. It may also be of value to pursue things that help eliminate stress or at least reduce it. Whether that is reading, listening to music, etc. then increasing those activities may also help combat insomnia particularly if it is stress related. For the causes of insomnia that are dietary or brain chemical in nature that can be trickier. However, trying to reduce fats, eat more veggie and fruits as well as fish helps. Also, consider using a nutritional supplement that helps fill in the gaps with vitamins, minerals and other compounds that help support the brain and its function. There are even some manufacturers who have supplements that are geared toward helping the brain balance chemicals and encourage the

Do your homework though and always discuss what you intend to take with a knowledgeable medical professional. Dealing with insomnia causes takes time and energy. It may be hard to contemplate that when you are fighting with a serious lack of sleep. However, it is critical to the long term success of your sleep efforts that you find and deal with what lies behind your sleeplessness. Anything less will leave you open to reoccurence or a lifetime dependent on drugs or other intervention to help you get to sleep.
