1 - Join a local group ride or cycling club The fastest way to learn about road bike racing is to learn from experienced riders. Joining a club, especially one that trains for road bike racing will give you the opportunity to get valuable advice, and learn the different racing techniques. More importantly, it will allow you to get comfortable riding in a pack. Don't feel bad if you get dropped, or left behind. 2 - Get a Proper Bike Fitting A proper bike fit will not only allow your body to perform at its optimum during training and at a race, but will greatly decrease the risk of injury to yourself. Everyone's physiology is different, and there are many points on a bike that can be adjusted to fit your needs. Head over to your local reputable bike shop and let them know what your goals are, and they can fit you on a bike that's right for you. 3 - Wear the Proper Attire Like any other sport, clothing is designed for a reason. In the case of road bike racing, it is designed for comfort while on the saddle. The main piece of clothing would be a quality pair of cycling shorts. These shorts are made to reduce chaffing and skin irritation. Make sure the fit is snug, but not too restricting. Another item of clothing to consider is of course, road cycling shoes. Make sure your shoes fit, otherwise blisters will ruin just about any ride. 4 - Stay Healthy Eating a balanced diet and staying healthy is a key factor in your training success. You may be burning tons of extra calories, but greasy burgers and fries will only hinder your body from building the power and endurance needed for those road races. Try to eliminate as much processed food as you can, and incorporate more vegetables and whole grains. Reduce the amount of soda you drink, and drink water frequently. Also, get at least 8 hours of sleep at night. You will want to perform at your peak performance when you want it, so make the switch to a healthier lifestyle. 5 - Get out there and ride! Nothing can replace time in the saddle. Road bike racing is a fun and growing sport, so get on your bike and have fun! Push yourself to keep up when you're out on your group rides, or try to beat your best time. You can only get faster if you put in the time to get out and ride.
