We are used to receiving super-size portions when we go out to eat. Over the years the servings have become larger and larger. Think of an order of French fries. Years ago they were a small cup size portion. Today they can be 3x the size, enough for three people rather than one. All this super-sizing has an effect on our waistbands. Our grandparents ate a three-inch bagel for a total of 150 calories. Today, most bagels average four to five inches across and contain a whopping 300 to 400 calories. A serving size of a bagel should be about the size of a hockey puck. Anything more than that would be equivalent to 2 servings. So you see its easy for the servings sizes to add up depending how you portion out your food. Clearly each extra serving is added calories and inches on your waistline. The first step is to understand the difference between a portion and a serving. A portion is the amount that you actually put on your plate, whereas a serving the amount of food defined by measurements such as cups or tablespoons. Let's examine what normal portion sizes should be by food categories, then we will look at how many servings of each you should have daily. Obviously for weight loss you would have even fewer than the "normal" number of servings, although just being conscious of portion size in itself will probably have a positive effect on your weight. ONE SERVING PORTION: Carbohydrate 80-120 calories or 15-20 grams carbohydrate Fruit 60-80 calories 15 grams carbohydrate Dairy 90-120 calories 12 grams carbohydrate Protein 1.0ounce 35-55 calories 0 carbs, 7 grams protein Fat 45 calories 5 grams fat, 0 protein, 0 carbs WHAT DO THESE SERVING SIZES LOOK LIKE? Carbohydrate 1/2 cup pasta or cereal: size of a tennis ball or small fist

For examples with carbs: Good carbs include whole wheat, brown rice and whole or multi-grains. These are all hearthealthier options than refined white foods including bread, pasta, rice and sugar. The average American is getting nearly half (42%) of all their calories from fat and 46% from carbohydrates, yet only 12% from protein and dairy. Fiber is another important part of a healthy diet. Getting nutrition from fresh fruits and vegetables will help treat and prevent digestive problems like constipation. HOW MANY SERVINGS PER FOOD GROUP IS NORMAL? For the average adult: Diet mode Carbohydrate 4-7 3-5 Fruit 2-3 2 Vegetables 3 4-5 Dairy 2-3 2 Protein 3.0 ounce 2-3 3-4 Fat 3 3 Clearly there are some basic principles in keeping your serving sizes in check and moderating your weight. Some good guidelines to follow at all times are: Eat more fresh foods, vegetables, fruit and whole grains Reduce fat intake Limit sweets and salt Moderate or eliminate alcohol Control portion sizes and watch total number of servings (calories) you consume.
