Slide 1: 21st Century Library Vision to the Future subtitle style Click of edit Master Anita Grannary 4/3/10
Slide 2: Vision for Port Guichon’s Library After much consideration, research and reflection, I have narrowed down my vision for my school elementary library into three categories: Technological Development Library Function Librarian Role 4/3/10
Slide 3: Reasoning  Technological development: At present there are no functioning computers accessible to the students in the library Library Function: Room for improvement in “opening up” the library and increasing its accesibility Librarian Role: Opportunity to advocate for the library, ensuring its continued growth and relevance 4/3/10  
Slide 4: Technological Development “From Knowledgeable to Knowledge-able” (Wesch 2009) How do we guide students from the past emphasis on memory and knowledge building to the present skill of knowledge location and analysis? 4/3/10
Slide 5: Techno Savvy: What Our Students Need to Know According to Micheal Wesch, the 21st century learner must have the ability to, “find, sort, analyse, share, discuss, critique, and create information.” There is a definite movement away from building students’ memory skills, to a focus on building skills to enable students to use and manipulate information to create and demonstrate their knowledge. 4/3/10
Slide 6: The Techno Path for Port Guichon    Better access to computers Use of web 2.0 tools to highlight library program Debut of a Library Club to help coordinate on-line book talks, blog entries and web page additions Lessons which integrate the use of technology ie; voicethread, animoto, podcasts 4/3/10 
Slide 7: Library Function “From Place to Function” (Bailin, Grafstein, Baruch College, CUNY) How do we re-create or re-invent the library to transform it from being a “room” to a “diversified learning environment”? 4/3/10
Slide 8: The Purpose of the 21st Century Library Bailin and Grafstein’s vision of the future library is focuses rather on its function as opposed to its locale. The library is considered more of an all access service than a location. “We will then not have to worry about students going to “the library”—the library will be everywhere they need it to be.” 4/3/10
Slide 9: Re-defining Port Guichon Library A concerted effort to make the library as accessible as possible to all its users, students, staff, parents and community. Advocacy for the library through PAC meetings, newsletters, special events Increased Visual representation of Library in school, bulletin boards, school web page, blog Library web page featuring: helpful links 4/3/10   
Slide 10: Librarian’s Role “A Librarian in the House?” (Beth Posner, City University of New York Graduate Center) How do we move away from the traditional image of the Librarian as the bureaucratic, authority figure to the future role as the hands on facilitator of learning for all? 4/3/10
Slide 11: Vision of the 21st Century Librarian “Focus on increasing the quality and quantity of interactions between academic librarians and their community is a positive way to approach the future of academic librarianship.” Beth Posner’s statement is like an awakening of what the future holds for librarians. We are no longer the “Keeper of Books” but a guide to those in need of navigating their way on the path to 4/3/10
Slide 12: My Role as Port Guichon’s Librarian   Pro-active, seek to make the library a vital and inspirational tool of the school Seek opportunities to engage with the learning of the students, through team teaching and peer collaboration Assume a more active role in professional development, seek to provide informational sessions to staff, students, parents and peers, through a variety of means ie, Youtube videos, podcast How4/3/10 
Slide 13: AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner 4/3/10
Slide 14: Summation  Based on the AASL standards it is evident that I as a TL need to address students abilities in the use, manipulation and creation of information. Knowledge is everywhere for these students, they need to learn where it is, how to use it and how to share their discoveries. 4/3/10
