Slide 1: Eating Disorder Treatment The current system of treating eating disorders in the United States is unjust because patients are not being admitted and covered for treatment and those who are admitted are not given proper treatment.
Slide 2: Statistics • 3 in 10 females have an eating disorder • 50,000 people in the U.S. alone will die from their eating disorder this year • Children as young as 7 are being diagnosed
Slide 3: Types of Treatment Inpatient Residential Outpatient
Slide 4: Insurance Coverage • Insurance covers less than 10% of treatment costs • Average cost of treatment per day: $1800 • 71% of people surveyed said they had to drop out of treatment due to financial issues
Slide 5: Rejection from Treatment • 90% of sufferers are denied access to treatment • Patient must have confirmation of illness from their insurance company to go into treatment • If a patient’s disorder is deemed simply behavioral (they have no emotional or mental disturbances), they are not given treatment
Slide 6: Premature Release from Treatment • 80% of patients are released 35% sooner than they should be • Released once they are medically stable, not emotionally healthy
