If you started college right out of high school, you were quickly confronted with a 10-pound weight gain the first semester. Many factors contributed to this gain-dorm food, "care packages" from home, more beer than anyone really needed. But you weren't alone. This occurrence of weight gain was so widespread that it became known as the "Freshman 10". Working professionals, starting college in their 30's, 40's, 50's and older, have their own brand of the "Freshman 10". Adding school to work, family and other commitments means giving up something in your life. You will NOT give up work to go to school. You will NOT give up your family, friends, or relationships to go to school. What you WILL probably give up is the time to exercise. Lack of exercise usually means weight gain and older working students may confront the "Freshman 10" whether taking classes at a college campus or online. Parade Magazine recently published a short article about finding ways to exercise and cut calories while at work. These suggestions could be applied to finding ways to exercise and cut calories while taking classes and being a student. Unless you are in a physical job, most of your day is sitting at your computer or attending meetings. Then, as a student, you sit in a classroom or behind a computer at home, taking your on-line classes. So, using the rules from the Parade Magazine article, here are a few simple ways to counteract the "Freshman 10": oExercise in short segments. Tim Ferriss, author of The 4-Hour Work Week, usually exercises in short segments (10 to 15 minutes) several times a day. Studying an hour and then working out 10 minutes with hand weights, stretching or yoga, will not only cut calories, but will stimulus the brain for another study session. oStanding and pacing during a teleseminar. You are on the phone-no one can see you pacing, but you are burning calories. oRecording lectures and listening while walking. Put lectures on your iPod or iPhone and listen while you walk around the neighborhood or a park. oRecording ideas while you walk. Walk to think about reports or term papers. Record these thoughts on your hand-held recording device. While these small changes will not make you "buff", they will help clear you mind for you busy life and burn some calories in ways almost anyone can do.
