When I ask them why, I get all kinds of answers, from I don't need to lift weights, to I don't want to look like the incredible hulk. This tells me that most people don't understand how weight loss (WL) and weight maintenance (WM) are achieved.The main ideas behind cardio are cardiorespritory health and WL and WM. Im going to focus on the WL/WM maintenance for this article. For WL to take place, we need to burn more calories then we eat. Period. A calorie is a measurement of energy place on the nutrients in food. Knowing this lets us know that in order to burn calories, we need to burn or expend energy. We do this by moving our muscles because; energy is needed for a muscle to move or contract. Are you starting to see the picture? We can conclude then, that the more muscle we have or the more muscle we use, the more energy or calories we will burn. For our purpose of WL, the more calories we burn, the more fat we lose. Something worthy of being mentioned is that as we gain muscle we gain weight. The reason for this is that muscle is a rather dense fiber and weights more then fat. So even if you are losing fat, you may also be gaining muscle and gain weight according to the scale. This is why it is recommended to monitor you body fat composition or measurements instead of the scale. Another thing to take into consideration is the fact that it's our muscles that give us our figure, in addition to our bone structure. By that I mean the difference in bone structure for men and woman. So if you're a woman looking for the "hour glass" or a male looking for the "V", it's all in the muscles. When we "lift weight" or do weight training, our body does two important things in regards to losing weight. One, we build our muscles, that is, we increase the size of the muscle fiber. Second as out body learns the movement and it also get harder by increasing the weights, we use more of our dormant muscles. The heavier a weight is, the more muscle units it takes to lift it. As you can see, this causes us to burn calories. Hopefully this helps you to understand how important weight training is to a well rounded exercise program. So if you're at a standstill and can't seem to lose the weight, maybe it's because you are not able to burn enough energy because of lack of muscle. Try adding a weight training cycle to your workout.
