Slide 1: Using Spa Covers and Hot Tub Covers For Proper Winterization The leading cause of damage to spas and hot tubs is improper closing during winter also known as winterization. With the high resultant costs of repairing damage due to freezing of your spa or hot tub, it is wise to carefully close down your spa during the winter months. If you have doubts about being able to properly winterize your spa covers or hot tub on your own, it is advisable to contract the services of your local spa expert. Also enquire from them on whether they can guarantee their winterization against any freeze cracks that may occur in your spa or hot tub, pipes and equipment. Below are some general tips on how to properly winterise your spa with spa covers and hot tub covers. In order to begin with the winterization of your spa, turn off the circuit breaker of the unit's electrical line, or if possible, unplug the unit. You may then remove the hard thermal spa covers or hot tub cover and drain out your unit. Once done, leave the bottom drain spout open. If your spa has an air channel and blower, activate these so as to blow all the water out of the air channel underneath the seats. Next, mop up any remaining water including in the foot-well and filter canister compartment. Unscrew or loosen all fittings on your spa equipment and leave them this way such that water is able to come out. Also remove any drain plugs that may be on the pump housing, as well as on the filter canister and heater. You should then blow out any residual water from the jet piping. Once done, put back the spa cover back on top of the unit. Secure this spa cover to the unit such that it will not be flipped up and blown away by the wind. You may also want to look into protecting your spa covers or hot tub cover, whether you are using it on an in-ground or portable unit. To do this, you will need to invest in a durable tarp that can be placed over your hard thermal cover so as to ensure that water doesn't leak in through the seam in the hard cover. You may then lay some swimming pool type water lubes around the perimeter of your spa on the decking which will help prevent rain water from getting into the spa or hot tub during the winter months.
