There are many food blenders available in the marketplace. But only a few can be called a power blender, that is, with sufficient power to blend anything with optimum results. Most popular blenders will give you acceptable results, but the best blenders will perfectly blend anything and last for many years because of their design, construction and power. The heart of any blender is the motor. You might be impressed by the fancy digital controls or the simplicity of a single push-button control. But if the motor doesn't have enough power to give the best results over and over again, you will be disappointed. Check out the specifications of a blender and notice the wattage rating. Wattage translates to power. True power blenders have the highest wattage ratings. The motor turns the blending blades within the jar containing foods to be blended. The speed of the blades and time determine the desired results. Not having enough power to blend all foods can be a problem. The blades may strain to turn or even stop. This is not a good thing because the motor may "burn-out" under such strain. A lack of power to thoroughly break up any recipe ingredient results in a poor finished product. Some people have said too much power will push some ingredients to the top and not be touched by the blades. There is a bit of truth in that some food items may rise to the top of the vortex created by the blades. However, most high-powered blenders incorporate a variable speed sequence in their blending programs to insure everything is blended perfectly. Making cool smoothies using ice is a real treat in warm weather. Blending ice to the proper consistency takes power to do it right in the least amount of time. Good blenders will turn the ice to snow in just a few seconds. With high power comes a higher noise level. But it is usually for a shorter cycle time than that of the average blender. When the noise becomes an issue most people will push the button, walk out of the kitchen, and come back to a perfect result. Cleanup is always an issue for me. I dislike taking apart the blade mechanism for cleaning. If you have ever replaced the jar gasket in the wrong position before the next use you can appreciate an even greater frustration. I prefer the one piece jar and blade combination that can be cleaned by running a quick blend of warm soapy water, rinsing and be ready for the next recipe. Some one piece units can be put in the dishwasher. When purchasing a blender consider power, warranty, and reputation to get a good return on your investment. If you plan to use the blender on a regular basis, choose the highest powered one you can find that will fit your budget.
