The difference between an intolerance and an allergy First off, a food, or yeast, intolerance is not the same as a yeast allergy. A yeast intolerance is a response by your immune system when you can no longer process certain foods - in this case, yeast. A food allergy is also responded to by your immune system, but the response is immediate and the symptoms are very quick - sometimes immediate - and can be extremely dramatic and dangerous. An allergy to peanuts comes under this category and, in a serious attack, can put the person who consumed the peanuts into anaphylactic shock, which requires a trip to the emergency room Only approximately 1% of the population have food allergies, whereas one in three people can suffer from one of the four major food intolerances - yeast, gluten, fructose, and lactose. Many people aren't aware that they have a food intolerance and that, if it's left untreated, it can lead to serious illness and health related problems. What causes a yeast intolerance? A certain amount of yeast, called candida albicans, is necessary in our systems. However, several things can cause the yeast to start growing out of control - a candida albicans overgrowth - and lead to a myriad of symptoms that we, and our doctors, may not be able to identify as being caused by this excessive yeast. This condition is known as candidiasis. Normally, beneficial bacteria keep the candida albicans under control, but many things - such as antibiotics, birth control pills, poor nutrition, and stress - can cause the beneficial flora to be destroyed. When this happens, it leaves more room for the yeast to grow. What does the yeast need to grow? Sugar is the biggest culprit, or anything that turns to sugar in your system, such as white flour, alcohol, and high carbohydrate foods. The symptoms of yeast intolerance can vary between individuals. Here is just a small list of some of the reactions to an intolerance you may experience:
Headaches Flatulence
Slide 2: Bloated stomach Diarrhea Thrush Vaginal yeast infection Abnormal cravings for sweets Chronic skin conditions As you can see, these are all symptoms of many different conditions. How can you tell if you are yeast intolerant? The best thing you can do if you suspect an intolerance is causing your problems, is to follow an elimination diet for three to six months. Some of the foods you will need to eliminate are:
Anything with yeast, particularly alcohol and bread Cheese and yogurt Anything with caffeine such as tea and coffee SOFT DRINKS Vinegar and any products made with vinegar It's not as difficult as it sounds and there is help at hand.
