Preparedneess begins with YOU! Make sure you're prepared for the polar shift and the 12/21/12 doomsday prediction, no matter what actually happens! http://www.familysurvivalsolutions.com/ ==== ==== ID: 5547060 Author: Dave Westbrook Date Published: Dec 13, 2010 Title: Long Term Food Storage - Save The Bugs Society! Summary: Hey wait a minute - I didn't stock up on dried goods just to keep bugs fat and healthy in my pantry! What can I do ... Body: OK, so this isn't what you had in mind. You go to get some grain out of that bucket in your pantry only to discover...bugs thriving on your long term food storage supply! There are a few bug lovers out there, but most people aren't that interested in spending money on food for the enjoyment of weevils, beetles and other critters. So what can you do to get them before they get your food? Here are some important points to follow to make sure you're not wasting your time stocking up.1. Research the suppliers where you're getting your dried foods from. They aren't all created equal. Some of this may simply be trial and error, but you can also ask around from people who are also interested in long term food storage to find out where they buy their foods. There is no guarantee, but prevention is the best cure. Keep in mind that food has to run quite a gauntlet while it makes its way from the grower to you. Between harvest and your dinner table more than twenty percent of food in the United States is destroyed by pests. This means that what does make it to your pantry, may come with bugs already in it. Thus, do everything you can to avoid bringing them home.2. Use airtight containers. This will keep new bugs from getting into your food after you've stored it in your pantry. There are a couple different options. Probably the best choice is plastic buckets with rubber gasket lids. If you choose this option, make sure you get food grade buckets to avoid contamination with toxic materials. A second option for air tight containers would involve the use of Mylar bags. These can provide air tight protection, especially if you seal them yourself with a hot iron. The disadvantage of this method is that they aren't as convenient for long term food storage as buckets, and also have to be re-sealed if opened.3. Don't take chances. Even though you do the best you can to get your dried foods from a reputable source, it's safest to assume that some bugs are already living in it. To kill them, use oxygen absorbers. These will only work if you're storing your food in air tight containers, discussed above. This is effective against pests because removal of oxygen from the container leaves nitrogen behind which, without oxygen in the mix, kills food pests. The nitrogen is harmless to the food, so this is a safe and simple approach to dealing with insects. Make sure you use the right number of absorbers for the size of container your using. You can google "Oxygen absorbers" to find data on that. Want to learn more about long term food storage?
