Acer 1383 is a red beauty, Jan 09 ,2010 Robert D. Archibald (Cleveland, ohio) I already have 2 HP laptop PCs, but with one failing, and a desire to have something a little smaller, I started on a 3 week exploration for one of the new netbooks.I did extensive and exhaustive research, reading especially the Amazon,PC Magazine, etc reviews. I did not have CD or DVD requirements, nor did I want excessive bells and whistles. It should be noted that in evaluating and reading the reviews(especially those in Amazon) the model number does not always check out with the item reviwed. In other words, I often found a review supposedly evaluating the d250-1042, when it fact it was a d250-1383.Also, some of models with different model #s were all the same except for the price and the color! I finally selected the 1383 and it is perfect!! It came before it was promised, was very well packaged and set up easily. It is a little sparce on instructions, and I am not at all computer-adept; but You-Tube & the aforementioned reviews made set up easy. I uninstalled a number of the unwanted and unneeded programs and it has worked like a charm. It boots up within 35 seconds, works very smoothly and has caused no problems. It has Windows 7 Starter, which I initially did not want but it seems to be working well and moves from one program to the next easily. I've only used it unplugged 3 or 4 times but each time the battery has lasted well into the 5-7 hour range. Its key board, tho small, is not too small and I am a peck and poke typist anyway. The Asus and the Toshiba are better and more expensive netbooks; but for the price, this Acer Aspire One 1383 "red beauty" can't be beat! Acer Netbook, Jan 09 ,2010 Bruce D. Busboom (Dewey, IL United States) Well, it works - a stripped down version of a laptop, perfect for travelers who just want to check email. No CD drive, Windows 7 Starter, etc. Also, I would add another GB of memory (only has 1). And if I had waited two weeks I could have gotten it for $287 instead of $329. Amazon should have a "30 Day Price Matching Policy" or something. different flavor compared to EEE, but I like it so far, Jan 09 ,2010 C. Gu I bought my daughter an EEE 1000HE back in March, which she is hooked on. Seeing the price on this one at Xmas time I decided to get myself a gift. Here are some comparisons with 1000HE: Body design -- This one feels much slimmer and lighter, despite the extruding battery. The EEE's flush-fitting battery is smooth but a bit boring, while the Aspire's battery adds some character IMHO, plus the one-design-fit-all strategy makes replacement easier to find at good prices. Keyboard and touchpad -- The ones on 1000HE are much better, especially the touchpad. Acer should enlarge the touchpad, widening horizontally and putting the buttons on the edge like 1000HE. Windows 7 versus XP -- 7 seems much faster and cleaner, and maybe the credit should go to the stripped-down starter version. People complain about "bloatware" but want all the bells and whistles in their OS, which appears self-contradictory. You can't do too much with a netbook anyway, so why install all the software/parts you rarely use on it. BTW, the 1000HE (XP) has a faster processor (N280, 1.66GHz) and 2G RAM, while the AOD250 (7) has N270 (1.6GHz) and 1G RAM. LCD -- The same diagonal measurement and resolution, but the one on Aspire is slightly wider and "shorter". The shiny screen on Aspire looks crisp but has narrow viewing angles, and the matte screen on EEE has darker black. A nice touch by Acer -- The Aspire has a simple utility for retrieving the machine ID including the serial number. I can only find the SN of the 1000HE from the saved box as the prints on the label on the bottom all wore out.
