Slide 2: Who is MHCC? The Mental Health Coordinating Council (MHCC):  is the peak body for non-government organisations (NGOs) working for mental health throughout NSW  membership includes specialist and mainstream, consumer and carer groups, and other bodies interested in mental health  has an ongoing leadership, policy advice and advocacy role in NGO mental health issues  facilitate linkages between government, nongovernment and private sector providers acting as a liaison body for the views of its membership
Slide 3: MHCC and Training  In 2007 MHCC became a Registered Training Organisation and established the Learning and Development Unit  To offer training and professional development to the NGO mental health sector  This allows training in nationally recognised accredited units and courses.
Slide 4: What training is offered?  Short courses specialising in mental health  Specialist training for non mental health workers  Customised training for organisations  Leadership in Action Program Leadership and Management Training
Slide 5: Nationally recognised training  Certificate IV in Mental Health  Certificate IV in alcohol and other drugs work  MHCC Leadership in Action (Advanced Diploma of Community Sector Management)  Mental Health Connect – Mental Health for Community workers
Slide 6: Target Audience  Community workers who are working with people with a mental health issue on an ongoing basis – not mental health triage  Relevant work roles may include: • Community, Family, Youth, Disability, AOD, Health, Aged Care, Employment Support, Children’s services, Housing and tenancy, Case managers, Intake workers, Community development, Pastoral Care, Frontline supervisors, Team Leaders, Program Managers
Slide 7: Focus of MH Connect  Offer knowledge and skills to community workers to assist them to better understand and support people with mental health issues  Improvement of recognition of mental health problems and appropriate referral by community support workers  Not to diagnose but to recognise change and focus on behaviour rather than illness  Wide dissemination of the principles and application of recovery orientated approaches in mental health support work  Promotion of workplace skill development and career options in specialist mental health clinical and support work
Slide 8: Day 1  Focus is on working with people / language and consumer role  Recovery framework • Diverse definitions of recovery • Principles of recovery • Dignity of Risk • Recovery model • Worker role  NGO and public Mental Health sector NSW / MH Act  Anxiety / Depression / Psychosis / Personality Disorder
Slide 9: Day 2  Skill development built around stages of change (use of case studies,role plays etc)  Skill development includes: • • • • • • Motivational interviewing (introductory) Miracle Question Scaling questions SMART Goal setting Monitoring and referral checklist Wellness contract
Slide 10: Participant Comments  The best part of the training was the opportunity to discuss work practices with other professionals  A well delivered and thorough course. Well mixed up between theory and practical. Was great that we moulded activities for group wants/needs and what we wanted to get out of the course  Thankyou! Really enjoyed this course – has generated more interest for me re mental health. Interesting course that touches on very interesting and crucial issues!  Overall the training was fantastic. The delivery was great.  Well done to both of you!!! By all accounts you were an absolute hit - they loved the training and got a lot out of it. I’m really pleased we had the opportunity to provide this training for our staff – thank you.
