Slide 1: ==== ==== You can learn more about singing harmony and read our reviews by visiting our website for singing tips and software to help you sing better. http://www.howcanisingbetter.net ==== ==== Many modern songs, regardless of their genre, have some degree of harmonizing in them, between two or more singers. Maybe you yourself would like to learn how to sing harmony. When used wisely, harmonies can greatly enhance the beauty of a melody, but they can also ruin an otherwise good song if inadequate scales or singers are chosen. Examples of great harmony usage range from The Oak Ridge Boys to Gaither Vocal Band, among several other groups and artists. You can develop this skill yourself by following three steps capable of giving great results, as long as you practice often. 1. Familiarize Yourself With Major and Minor Scales A scale is a set of 8 successive notes within one octave, named with the letters A to G. In a major scale, the intervals between notes follow this pattern: full step - full step - half step - full step - full step - full step - half step. In a minor scale, this is the pattern: full step - half step - full step - full step - half step - full step full step. Major scales are usually associated with happy, positive songs, while minor scales tend to be used in more melancholic tunes. 2. Train with Another Person who will Sing Harmony with You After you acquire this basic level of knowledge about music theory, you need to train with another person who will sing harmony with you, preferably one who already knows enough about it. To practice together, one of you will sing a note that is part of the melody or play it in a musical instrument. The other one will join in singing the same note, and then taking it higher or lower in pitch, until it reaches the desired harmony note. This can be repeated throughout the whole melody, until both singers are comfortable with their parts. You can even switch parts; many teachers recommend learning both parts of one harmony in order to maximize your level of comfort with it, since harmony is a difficult skill to master. 3. Proceed with some ear training exercises Ear training exercises will further help you in your quest to learn how to sing harmony. Play a note
Slide 2: on the piano or another instrument and try to determine the pitch just by listening to it. Then, imagine that you are singing the note. Play the note once again and, this time, sing the note yourself, as you imagined before. After this, repeat the process, but sing a note higher than the one before. You can also interchangeably sing one note higher and then one note lower, or only sing lower notes. There is good software available to buy or download that can help you with ear training, to help you develop a good relative pitch i.e. the ability to recognize chords, scales or intervals by ear, or even perfect pitch i.e. the ability of identifying isolated notes just by listening to them. These three steps, done correctly and repeatedly, will give you an edge in learning how to sing harmony.
