Slide 1: ==== ==== Get the Best Book on Getting Toddlers to Sleep "Go The F**ck to Sleep" here... http://tinyurl.com/7oo5f67 ==== ==== Having trouble getting your toddler to sleep. Many parents have a difficult time getting their toddler on a regular sleeping pattern. Because all children are different, some require less sleep than other, and parents have hectic schedules it can become hard to cope with as you become frustrated and exhaustion starts to set in. There is an old saying, if mom is not happy, no one is happy, that goes for fathers as well. Children can sense when there is something wrong, trying to hide it does not seem to help. Here are some helpful tips to try with your toddler so both you and your little one can get some rest. The best tip is to put your toddler on a schedule and keep with it, set a bedtime and a nap time for during the day. If your toddler attends a daycare or is with a caregiver make sure you have them try to follow the schedule you have planned out. Toddlers that take a nap and get enough sleep through out the night in general are much happier and rested to get through there day. The suggestion amount of sleep is 11 hours through the night. If your little one is getting 11 hours of sleep through the night then they are getting the right amount of sleep. Bedtime should be at a set time every evening. If your child enjoys baths it is a great idea to wash them up and then let them relax for awhile. If you find that they become overly excited during bath time you might want to change this to an earlier time and just get them cleaned up and changed into there pajamas after dinner. Try about 15 to 20 minutes of cuddling or relaxing them, this helps them wind down for the night. If you find that your toddler becoming restless around this time do not be alarmed, this is a sign of them being over tired and ready for bedtime. Keep to the time(s) you have set. It can be hard at first, for some reason toddlers think they will miss out on something by going to sleep even though there bodies require it. You are not doing anything wrong or being a bad parent if your child cries. It is ok to go and get them after a little while if they are still upset. Holding them and calming them for anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes and then putting them back to bed. When putting them back into there crib or bed try facing them the opposite way. This for some reason works, giving them a different view and position helps settle them. As time goes on you may only have to do this once and then eventually not at all. The key is to keep to the schedule you have set. I used the following schedule with my daughter starting when she was 3 months old. She would go to sleep at 6:00pm and up by 7:00am back for a nap at 10:00am and usual up by noon then a second nap at 2:00pm for about an hour and then to bed after her bath and some cuddling. As time went and she became a toddler I discarded the second nap and pushed her bedtime back by an hour, but kept to my schedule. Now it is very easy, she will usually make no fuss at bedtime that is if she hasn't fallen asleep first. We still have our ups and downs at times depending on how she is feeling.
Slide 2: How your child is feeling also plays a huge roll in how they sleep. Is your child teething, if so this is a challenge and there is not too much you can do but provide pain relief with such aids as Baby Orajel, Baby Motrin or Advil along with freezes and other cold foods. Always consult with a doctor or pharmacist before giving your child any pain medications. A lot has changed and what was recommended when we where young, like cough syrups and such are literally banded and advised not to use till children are at least over the age of two or three. Getting your child on a regular sleeping schedule and having them follow it is not an easy task. If you keep to a schedule a pattern is sure to form and going to bed will eventually be like clock work. It may take time and every child is different, some require more or less sleep but in the long run it will make for a happy child and happier parents.
