If you want to have a go at making realistic looking buildings for your model railway you might be wandering what materials you can use. The first question you have to address is what scale you are working to as your buildings need to be in proportion to the size of your trains. There are a number of materials available for construction such as, wood, cardboard, foam, balsa wood, papier mache and plastic. These are some of the popular materials used. Or you might prefer to buy a plastic kit model. These are sold in different scales, are light in weight and easily to assemble. You can paint them whatever colour you choose. You can always have a play with the kit models and adapt them to how you want your buildings to look. You could use different materials for different buildings. It is best to work from a plan and how much detail you decide to include is up to you. You don't really know how much space the buildings are going to take up until you have made them, so a good method is to make some actual size mock ups of foam or cardboard to give you some idea. Empty breakfast cereal boxes are easy to work with and ideal for this purpose. You can create windows and doors in them as well if you wish. Once constructed they are easy to move around and position. A bought model kit might not fit in the space you have allocated for it and might not be easy to adapt. Bear in mind cardboard may not be the best choice if you are thinking of creating a building long term with this material because it will soften and curl when exposed to moisture.
