Excitement is building for the well known annual Coachella Music and Arts Festival held in Coachella Valley, California and tens of thousands of people are expected to be flooding the area as usual so that there will be potential for a huge consumption of resources. One important question that would be asked in these times however is: will there be assured sustainability responsible use of resources, at Coachella? Answering the question takes us back to 2007 when in reference to the issue of sustainability, Coachella teamed up with a not-for-profit organisation named Global Inheritance that develop cause-based campaigns to educate people about issues of global impact. As a result, a range of sustainability programs have been introduced at Coachella over the years so that this year, they have the Carpoolchella, Energy FACTory, TRASHed, 10 For 1 Recycle and Energy Battle Royal programs. Carpoolchella is a competition in which people carpool, aiming to arrive in cars containing 4 or more people and with a secret spotter checking, may end up winning VIP tickets/passes for life. At Energy FACTory people are invited to generate energy by their own personal energy - human effort by doing this such as cycling, for example. TRASHed encourages people to recycle by using redesigned recycling bins designed by artists from around the planet. 10 For 1 Recycle involves people exchanging bottles, or cans that they have picked up on the grounds for cold water whilst a giant Tyrannosaurus Rex crushes bottles and cans on the grounds. Energy Battle Royal has colourful professional wrestlers representing various energy sources and provides an opportunity for people to learn more about them with even children being engaged by colouring pictures of the wrestlers! Overall, from the aforementioned, it is quite evident that Coachella has an ongoing commitment to sustainability, not through mere lipservice, but action, due to having teamed up with Global Inheritance to establish programs related to carbon emissions, conservation, alternative energy etc. The answer to the titled question is therefore yes. It is heartening to see such an example as this, because such green issues as sustainability have global relevance; affecting the longevity of this planet earth and its people.
