If you are thinking of exercise as a short term experience that you can stop once you lose ten pounds or get into those skinny jeans, stop right now and turn that thinking around! This has to become something you just naturally do day after day as a way of life. Otherwise, you will put the weight back on once you stop working out. The following tips are designed to help you start this new workout program with the best chances of long term success. #1: Consistency is more important than duration. If you cannot realistically workout six days a week, then don't even try to commit to that. Set up a schedule that fits well with your lifestyle and daily commitments and then stick with it no matter what. Sit down right from the beginning and make a list of potential obstacles and excuses that could stand in your way, and then make another list of ways to eliminate the excuses and combat the obstacles. Hit those workouts no matter what it takes because consistency is what will pay off in the long run. If you design a super aggressive program that requires you to be in the gym six days a week you could get burned out and discouraged which leads to quitting altogether. Instead, set up something that is realistic even if it means only working out a few days a week. It is more likely to become a routine you naturally do that day, which means you are more likely to continue long term. #2: Exercise doesn't have to be unpleasant or painful. Get the idea out of your head that the only workouts that are really effective are those that leave you whimpering in a ball on the floor in a puddle of blood, sweat, and tears. While some workouts at that intensity would definitely do your body good, you definitely do not need to start out at that level. Work with the physical condition you are in right now and push yourself slightly beyond your comfort zone. More importantly, if you find you simply dread one activity and hate doing it, then find something that is more enjoyable for you. There are so many different exercise programs out there that literally everyone can find something that they at least do not hate.
