Slide 55: Comparing Ser and Estar
Both are “To be.” When do you use one or the other in a sentence? What's the difference?
" Ser "
General rule: when describing a permanent or inherent quality. This includes: what quality something is made of, someone's occupation or nationality, physical characteristics, who a possession belongs to, dates, and amounts of something (including time).
" Estar "
General rule: when expressing the temporary state or condition of something. This something includes the location of things or people, moods and feelings, physical conditions and appearance. Also to describe the way something seems or appears now, as opposed to the permanent nature that “ser” covers. Also used in present progressive “-ing” descriptions: Estoy corriendo (I am running).
