Dr. Anil Potti believes in smoking cessation and lung cancer surveillance to decrease the risks and deaths associated with lung cancer. Another important 'avoidable' risk factor is radon exposure. For information on testing for radon in your home contact:
Dr Anil potti was also a research fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Joseph Nevins at Duke where he was involved in the development of genomic strategies to improve prognosis and treatment, with specific relevance to cancer. To date, Dr. Anil Potti has more than 120 publications, received many prestigious awards, and has been an invited speaker at many national and international scientific meetings.
The suspicion of breast cancer often first arises when a lump is detected in the breast during breast examination or a suspicious area is identified during screening mammography. In order to diagnose the cause of the suspicious area or lump in the breast, a physician will perform a biopsy.
Cancer Research
Dr. Anil Potti believes that research is critical to the advancement of cancer care. A crucial step toward success in cancer therapy is the development of new methods and strategies for matching new and existing drugs with the characteristics of individual patients — what is frequently termed personalized cancer treatment. On one level, personalizing treatment would improve efficacy and spare patients unnecessary toxicity, but more broadly, it is critical for real success in cancer therapy: without a robust mechanism for selecting the right treatment for the right patient at the right time, Dr. Potti thinks that patients will continue to see only incremental improvements and have little hope for substantial survival gains.
In this context, Dr. Potti notes that the onus is on the oncologists and the research community, since there are now the tools in development to address this challenge.
Dr. Anil Potti believes in treating the entire person – not just the disease. His motto (one that he learned from one of his patients) which has helped him during tough times and one that he always tries to pass on to his patients is “Hope beats despair everyday of the week and twice on Sundays”.
Dr Anil potti feels that the genomic test can theoretically apply to any cancer, but the Duke team focused its effort on lung cancer because the survival rate is just 15 percent. Lung cancer now kills more Americans each year than breast, prostate and colorectal cancers combined. But toxic chemotherapy drugs are prescribed only to patients with relatively large and aggressive tumors.
dr anil potti feels tha Cancer ! In the medical field, the word stands for a 'malignancy' or 'tumor' - an uncontrolled growth of cells. From his experience and interactions with patients and their families at Duke University and previously at University of North Dakota, Dr. Anil Potti believes that the word "cancer" affects patients at multiple levels and is extremely debilitating to families, both emotionally and physically.
