Position Title Database Administrator / Web Developer Nature of the Role This position reports to the Information Systems Manager and is responsible for the support and maintenance of the College’s business information systems, as well as enhancing their functionality. These systems support the College’s essential business functions and services for more than 3000 students and 1250 staff. Dimensions of the Role This position is part of the Information Systems Group (ISG) and will be required to operate broadly across the ISG range of functions. This position has a crucial role in applying information systems to improving business outcomes at the College, including: Installing information systems and maintaining them at optimal operational levels. Working closely with the staff and managers of a number of business areas, and business analysts, to plan, implement and maintain appropriate information systems solutions for the needs of the specific client groups. Improving the business value of the College’s data holdings by assisting in the development and implementation of strategies, policies and standards that are aligned with IT best practices and business directions.
Business Systems Infrastructure The College has a number of business systems that are critical to its operations, including: Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains (Financials) Microsoft Retail Management System (Point-of-Sale) PayGlobal (HR and Payroll) Synergetic (Student/Staff/ Parent/Alumni Management) AMLib (Library Management) OLAP (Analytical Processing) ITSM (Service Desk & IT Processes) WebCT (Online Learning). The College also has a number of specialised systems (eg timetabling) and a SQL/ColdFusion Intranet with a large number of applications (eg booking systems, online course selections, etc, all developed inhouse). Main Responsibility and Accountability Areas 1. Administer Database Servers Install, operate, and administer database servers as required for the effective operation of the College’s information systems. Devise and implement maintenance plans for the College’s database servers, so they operate at optimal levels, including high levels of data integrity, currency, security, and availability.

Monitor database servers and regularly review system, backup, and security logs to anticipate and rectify any issues that arise. Use diagnostic tools to identify database performance issues, and adjust database and server parameters as appropriate maintain optimal performance and availability for databases. Troubleshoot and resolve database operational and performance issues. Work with Network Services Group to ensure all databases are regularly backed up, and take a lead role in the planning of disaster recovery of databases and systems as required.
2. Enhance Functionality of Business Systems Design and develop queries, stored procedures, triggers and DTS packages to enhance the functionality of business systems. Design and develop interfaces between databases for ensuring data availability and integrity between information systems. Tune SQL queries for optimal performance. Develop scripts to automate system tasks and procedures. Use business intelligence tools to provide reporting and data aggregation as required. 3. Maintain and Develop Web Applications Maintain the current Intranet based applications. Analyse requirements specifications and design and document solutions that address the stated needs. Convert designs into working software in line with accepted best practice. Work with the client and members of ISG to develop and implement test cases for all applications being developed. Manage and implement application rollout in test and production environments. Maintain the systems and environments that allow clients to publish content to various web sites. 4. Provide System Support Work with clients to resolve technical issues within agreed SLAs. Provide assistance and advice to clients in developing queries and writing reports. Provide assistance to other members of ITS with technically challenging tasks. 5. Communicate and Document Solutions Provide technical advice and guidance to ISG to ensure optimum selection and implementation of College information systems. Liaise with external providers to coordinate work and provide technical and API documentation as necessary. Liaise with members of ISG to ensure all designs and implementations of solutions are consistent with ISG standards and methodologies. Document all requirements, designs, solutions, and test cases and maintain in version control system. Log all requests in call logging system.

Performance Indicators Performance of support services meets or exceeds agreed service levels. All work requests responded to and resolved within time frame appropriate to task urgency. Internal and external audits of security show policies and standards are correctly adhered to. Projects completed and implemented in line with the agreed specification. All solutions documented and maintained in version control system. Personal work and professional development plans are successfully implemented.
Position Requirements Business System and SQL Skills Thorough understanding of MS SQL Server 2000 and 2005 architecture. Fluency in backup/recovery, performance tuning, security, high availability and installation/ upgrade tasks. Extensive experience working with T-SQL, triggers, stored procedures and DTS packages. Experience in supporting a variety of business systems, including financial and student management systems. Experience with database driven web development. Experience with Cold Fusion / C# would be highly regarded. Experience in system analysis and design utilising standard methodologies and modelling tools. Problem Solving Can analyse complex problems and possesses the tenacity to see issues through to resolution and follow through decisions made under pressure and tight time constraints. Attention to detail in problem resolution and the execution of tasks. Communication Possesses good customer service and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with a range of clients. Ability to work as a member of a team, and independently as necessary. Demonstrated ability to document solutions, processes and issues, and follow coding standards and conventions as adapted by ISG. Other o Ability to deal with ambiguity and work well in a constantly changing environment.
Qualifications A degree, diploma or post graduate qualifications in Information Technology specialising in Software Development, Database Management, Systems Analysis & Design, or a related field. 3 to 5 years significant relevant demonstrated industrial experience Microsoft DBA Certification or progress towards certification would be highly regarded.
