The Power Of Habit 

A young woman walks into a laboratory. Over the past two years, she has transformed almost every aspect of her life. She has quit smoking, run a marathon, and been promoted at work. The patterns inside her brain, neurologists discover, have fundamentally changed.

Marketers at Procter & Gamble study videos of people making their beds. They are desperately trying to figure out how to sell a new product called Febreze, on track to be one of the biggest flops in company history. Suddenly, one of them detects a nearly imperceptible pattern—and with a slight shift in advertising, Febreze goes on to earn a billion dollars a year.

An untested CEO takes over one of the largest companies in America. His first order of business is attacking a single pattern among his employees—how they approach worker safety—and soon the firm, Alcoa, becomes the top performer in the Dow Jones.

As I was pondering the answer to that question, I realized that as I was thinking about the answer, it was 6 am, I was on the stationary bike warming up to begin my martial arts program. And then it hit me. Habit. I do the same thing every morning before I do anything else. I schedule the time for me everyday to exercise and it sets the tone for the rest of my day. I am regimented about it. I do it the same time, every day, with few exceptions. A long time ago when I made the lifestyle change I decided to make it an appointment with myself and never break it. I am flexible as far as scheduling the exact time. Based on my schedule, there are times when it may be earlier, but I always make certain it's the first thing I do everyday. If you are struggling with making a lifestyle change, you must make the change a habit and part of a rigid regimen...in the beginning. After a while when it becomes habit you won't have to think about it. You'll simply do it. There are a few programs that can help you with forming positive habits and beliefs. The one that helped me to make the changes permanent was Psychocybernetics by Dr. Maxwell Maltz. I was able to use the strategies in his book to make myself do the positive things I wanted to do with ease. And I've never looked back.
