Gynecomastia is the umbrella term used to describe the condition in which men develop enlarged breasts or 'man boobs'. If you think you may be one of the many men who have gynecomastia it is important to realise that you are not alone and that there are many ways of classifying gynecomastia a condition which affects many men in today's society. This article aims to arm you with some information about the various ways specialists have gone about classifying gynecomastia. Adolescent Gynecomastia Hormonal changes at puberty, is one of the main causes of gynecomastia. During puberty hormone levels increase. An increase in testosterone can also cause an increase in the female hormone, estrogen and lead to the development of glandular tissue just beneath the areola. In this case the enlarged area will not be less than 1cm in diameter or more than 5cm in diameter. In most adolescent cases the gynecomastia will disappear by itself and anyone experiencing this form of gynecomastia should not be concerned. Puffy Nipples Unfortunately not all cases of adolescent gynecomastia subside and even the leanest healthiest men often still cannot get rid of the extra bit of puffiness they developed during puberty. When classifying gynecomastia this condition is known as 'puffy nipples'. In this case there are surgical options available to help men to achieve a more defined pectoral muscle line. Adult Gynecomastia When classifying Gynecomastia in adults there are 5 main groups: Hormonal imbalance This is the main cause of Gynecomastia in males. This hormonal imbalance can be caused by medical conditions such as Klinefelter Syndrome. In the case where gynecomastia is caused by a hormonal imbalance hormone treatments can be taken in an attempt to reduce the symptoms. Obesity Often men appear to have 'man breasts' or 'man boobs' but the appearance is merely a result of adipose tissue (fatty tissue) concentrated in the chest area. This is known as Pseudo gynecomastia and 'false gynecomastia'. Losing weight with a controlled diet and specific exercises

If excessive weight is lost in the highly obese patients the skin can become saggy and deflated in this area and give the appearance of sagging boobs, there are several surgical treatment options available in this case to remove the excess skin and give the appearance of a smooth, 'normal' male chest. Steroid abuse This is a very common cause of gynecomastia. The use of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) often used by athletes and bodybuilders can cause gynecomastia in its purest form. Gynecomastia in lean men consists mostly of glandular tissue and virtually no fatty tissue this form of gynecomastia is often hard to see under solid chest muscles but can become considerably more noticeable in later life when the athlete begins to lessen his exercise regime. Several surgical options are available to treat this form of gynecomastia. Symptoms of Renal failure, Liver Failure Cirrhosis of the liver reduces the liver's ability to manufacture proteins and process hormones, nutrients, medications, and poisons. This can lead to increased estrogen in men and the development of male breasts. Side effects of Medication Some medicines can create estrogen effects in men as a side affect. These estrogens are given to men to treat prostate cancer and some other diseases. Marijuana and heroin and some prescription drugs, such as methyldopa (for blood pressure), cimetidine (for peptic ulcers), diazepam (Valium), antidepressants, and spironolactone (a diuretic) can also lead to gynecomastia as a side affect.
There are several types of gynecomastia and before you consider any treatments it is important to familiarise yourself with these differences.
