Puffy Nipples Unfortunately not all cases of adolescent gynecomastia subside and even the leanest healthiest men often still cannot get rid of the extra bit of puffiness they developed during puberty. Adult Gynecomastia When classifying Gynecomastia in adults there are 5 main groups: Hormonal imbalance This is the main cause of Gynecomastia in males. Steroid abuse This is a very common cause of gynecomastia. The use of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) often used by athletes and bodybuilders can cause gynecomastia in its purest form. Gynecomastia in lean men consists mostly of glandular tissue and virtually no fatty tissue this form of gynecomastia is often hard to see under solid chest muscles but can become considerably more noticeable in later life when the athlete begins to lessen his exercise regime. Several surgical options are available to treat this form of gynecomastia. Symptoms of Renal failure, Liver Failure Cirrhosis of the liver reduces the liver's ability to manufacture proteins and process hormones, nutrients, medications, and poisons. This can lead to increased estrogen in men and the development of male breasts. Side effects of Medication Some medicines can create estrogen effects in men as a side affect. These estrogens are given to men to treat prostate cancer and some other diseases. Marijuana and heroin and some prescription drugs, such as methyldopa (for blood pressure), cimetidine (for peptic ulcers), diazepam (Valium), antidepressants, and spironolactone (a diuretic) can also lead to gynecomastia as a side affect.
