What is gynecomastia? Gynecomastiais a medical condition that causes enlargement of the male breast tissues. Although gynecomastia translates into "woman breast," it is strictly a condition that only affects males. In many cases, the condition resolves on its own. But for others, gynecomastia liposuction and other forms of surgery are the only way to reduce the enlarged breast tissue. Causes of Gynecomastia Gynecomastia commonly occurs during times of hormonal changes, such as during infancy, puberty, and old age. The most common changes in hormones include an increase in estrogen or a decrease in testosterone. The condition can sometimes be associated with other diseases, such as testicular cancer, liver disease, tumors of certain glands, thyroid disorders, or breast cancer. For this reason, doctors often run a variety of tests before diagnosing patients with benign gynecomastia and recommending them for any type of gynecomastia liposuction or surgery. Grades of Gynecomastia Gynecomastia is often broken down into grades of classification, with the most common system as follows: Grade I: Minimal increase in breast tissue with no extra skin. Grade II: Moderate breast tissue enlargement with or without extra skin. Grade III: Exceptional breast tissue enlargement with extra skin. Gynecomastia Liposuction and Other Surgery Options Whether or not a patient is a candidate for surgical treatment for gynecomastia depends on several factors, such as: Overall health Age Medical history Extent of the condition Tolerance to specific therapies, including medications and procedures Future prognosis/expectations Patient preference.
Slide 2: Gynecomastia liposuction and/or other forms of surgery include the following: Suction Lipectomy: This is a type of gynecomastia liposuction that gives the surgeon the ability to taper the edges of the breast tissue without unpleasant side effects. Endoscopic Surgery: A much less invasive procedure than open surgery, endoscopic surgery is performed by inserting a small, flexible tube with a light and a camera lens at the end (an endoscope) into the skin so that the inside of the breast can be examined. Through this method of surgery, the breast tissue can be removed without having to make a large surgical incision. Open Surgery: More severe cases of gynecomastia sometimes require an open surgical procedure. Through this type of surgery, a moderate incision is made in the breast tissue and the excess tissue and skin are removed. For men who find their enlarged breast tissue uncomfortable or embarrassing, gynecomastia liposuction or other form of surgery is often recommended. Gynecomastia liposuction is the least invasive form of surgery.
