Fat-free diet foods have been around since the 1980s, and sales were over $35 Billion in 2005, far above other special categories like low-carb foods. I guess this means that most people still believe the often chanted mantra about cutting the fat out of your diet to help you be more healthy and to lose weight. However low fat diets have been proven to NOT work, so it doesn't seem like fat-free diet foods would work either. In fact, fat is a necessary nutrient for your body. A recent Harvard Medical School study showed that following a low fat diet (20% of calories) can cause you to actually GAIN weight. More info on low-fat diets and how they DON'T work and aren't healthy can be found in another article by this author: "Low Fat Diets Are Unhealthy and Don't Work". In addition to not helping you lose weight, fat-free diet foods, like other processed foods, have lots of problems associated with them. Added Sugars and MSG in Fat-Free Foods Lots of fat-free (and low-fat) diet foods have added sugars, as well as chemicals. Fat gives a lot of taste to foods, so if you take out the fat, manufacturers have to do something, or no one would buy it, certainly not for the second or third time! Eating lots of fat-free foods laden with sugar can cause insulin resistance, high triglycerides and even diabetes, so these added sugars can be a big problem for your health and weight over the long term. In addition to the sugar, fat-free diet foods often have added MSG, even if it is not labeled as such. MSG is used in laboratory experiments to make the animals obese, so it is no wonder that humans who consume MSG from their diet and other processed foods end up overweight. MSG is also a known neurotoxin and studies have shown that it kills brain cells. We Often Eat More When Foods are Fat-Free In addition, many of these foods are not inherently satisfying, and so often we eat them in much larger quantities, and can actually end up eating more calories than if we had just stuck with normal, full-fat foods. Have you ever found yourself thinking: "oh, it's fat-free" or "it's a diet food", so "it's OK to have more?" This is simply not true, and can end up causing us to gain more weight. Fat-Free Diet Foods Have Missing Nutrients Last but not least, fat is a necessary nutrient, even saturated fats are needed by the body for various important functions. In addition, the fat-soluble vitamins like vitamins A and D are found in large quantities only in foods with considerable amounts of fats in them (often saturated fats). So if you eat a lot of fat-free diet foods, you will more than likely end up missing nutrients that your body needs, and over time, your health will deteriorate. So do yourself a favor and stop eating fat-free
