Learning how to use colors, graphics, and images correctly can be one of the determining factors for whether website visitors will stay or hit the back browser. It is important to ensure the success of your site by having several people look at your site to find out their perspective on your color choices when doing website usability testing. Website Graphics - Do's Use the right graphic formats. GIF and JPEG are supported well by most web browsers. Always use ALT tags in all your graphics. Using an ALT tag with a description or key word will provide text for people who are viewing your site in text only views and will stand as a substitute if the graphic doesn't load as it should. Make sure to always use the width="" and height="" tags in your graphics as this will make them load faster. Take a look at your web page on different browsers and different computers. Some older computers may have darker screens, which will make your colors look a little different. Therefore, by checking different browsers and computers, you can see if your colors and graphics still look appealing even when they have a slightly different appearance. Use captions above your graphics to make them more interesting and help your website visitors better understand what they are looking at. Website Graphics - Don'ts Do not use too many graphics on any page. Too many graphics will make it load too slowly and people will lose interest and go elsewhere. Make sure your designer has compressed the graphics in the right format. Large graphic files will dramatically slow loading time, especially for slower connection speeds. Graphics in formats other than GIF or JPEG can also cause loading problems in some browsers or may not show up at all. Flashing graphics and ad banners annoy customers. Use banners or other ads in a way that does not distract the user from the main content or task of the website.
