To ensure your passion is grows and is not doused with disappointment, you need to follow the advice of the masters and avoid a few beginner woodworking pitfalls. Choose a wood plan made for beginners Woodworking Plans usually tell you if they are for the novice, intermediate woodworker or advanced professional. Do not be prideful! Be honest about your ability. If you are buying on the internet, you may not be able to look inside the woodworking book or woodworking pattern. You need to check if there is a review on the product. Other woodworkers who have purchased the woodworking plan may give you some clues as to whether it is manageable for beginners. Be careful! Some wood working plans say they are for the novice but are still a bit tricky. Check the plan is written in your language! The master wood worker may be able to tell just from the wood plan what to do but if you are a new woodworker, the step by step instructions are very important. There is no point trying to learn Japanese or German so you can understand what the woodworking plan is saying, and even worse, to try to bumble your way through with no clue. If your primary language is English, then get a wood plan in English. If you have your heart set on a woodworking plan written in another language, get on the internet. There are so many plans available on the internet and in Woodworking magazines these days that you are sure to find something very similar in English. Make sure the print is large enough and clear enough to read. Guessing whether you are seeing a 3, 5 or 8 can have disastrous effects. You could end up with a lid too small or drawers too big. Select a wood plan that tells you what tools you need. Some woodworking patterns forget you are a new woodworker. They assume you know what tools are needed for different parts of the process. Make sure your wood working plans have a tools and equipment list. Make sure you have the tools needed for your wood plan Beginner craftsman should only choose woodworking plans that require minimal tools and equipment. Avoid wood plans needing routers, large table saws or with miter cuts. Keep it simple! Do not go out and buy expensive woodworking equipment you do not need. As you become more

Whilst most wood plans in published books and plan collections are tried and true, there are still some around who fail to give you all the measurements. Again, they assume you can work it out.
