Slide 1: Most excellent LED Lights: A Good Future
You may already know how well LED (light-emitting diodes) bulbs work in flashlights. You may even know how well they do for computers, signs, uplighters, indicator lights and bike lights. But are you aware of the fact that recent technological advancements may have brought us to a new era in LED lighting for the home? General Electric has recently introduced a 40-watt LED bulb for regular home lighting, after making a thermal breakthrough that allowed them to keep the bulbs cool enough. A second design breakthrough helped in making the new 40-watt bulbs’ light less directional. A series of fins in the plastic casing over the bulbs disperses the light out from the bulbs. LED bulbs still don’t disperse out the light as well as fluorescent tubes, but they’re improving. LED bulbs have some advantages over fluorescent lights. Unlike compact fluorescent's (CFLs), LED's lack mercury, a dangerous toxin that CFL tubes will emit when they’re shattered. LED bulbs have a life than fluorescent tubes, and they’re a lot less likely to shatter. LED's low energy lighting work a lot better in cooler places than do fluorescent lights, and LED's attain full lumination as soon you turn them on. Unlike fluorescent tubes, LED bulbs aren’t diminished by being turned on and off frequently. LED's can come in almost any shape you want, and they’re smaller than fluorescent lights. And LED lights draw less power than fluorescent tubes. Engineers have been showing progress in solving the primary stumbling blocks with using LED's in home lighting: the low-quality light, the cost and the overly directional nature of LED light. An additional drawback with LED's bulbs is that they fade or can fail completely under hot conditions. They also have very distinct voltage and amperage specifications and are sensitive to fluctuations in either. But LED's g9 bulb are better than incandescent and fluorescent lights in some areas. LED's are great for flashlights because the bulbs last a very long time and they drain batteries a lot more slowly than incandescent. LED's are also good at focusing light, and they do well in cold temperatures. LED's don’t burn out suddenly or break when you drop them, so they’re very reliable for portable conditions like biking or camping. Unlike fluorescent and incandescent lights, LED lights, when used as coloured lights, don’t require coloured filters. That, in combination with their low heat output and small size, is why LED's are so popular for indicator lights or Christmas lights. Consumers have been uncertain about using led lights for homes because of the high initial price, particularly when compared to incandescent lights. But change could be coming.

Slide 2: In an energy initiative, the U.S. Congress has recently passed a bill legislating the phase-out of energygobbling incandescent household bulbs, beginning in 2012. They also voted to award a $10 million prize to the manufacturer that starts producing the first good LED bulb to replace the standard 60-watt incandescent. Two brands of 60-watt LED household bulbs will be coming soon. The revolution in home lighting is almost upon us. The future of LED lighting looks quite bright, indeed.
