Slide 1: ==== ==== Get the Best Study Guide Around for Human Anatomy, Physiology http://tinyurl.com/6vqh7zf ==== ==== The study of human anatomy and physiology has evolved over the years with major advancements in research and technology. The average person just seems to glide along, accepting any new medical advancement, when and as needed. For example, you have just discovered that you have high blood pressure. Not a big deal if its controlled. You leave the Doctors office with a prescription and go about your business. What would happen though, if that blood pressure medication was not available, or even worse ,if there any not been any technology, to even determine what your blood pressure was at. We all know that high blood pressure ,if left untreated can lead to a stroke, and even death. This is just one example. Lets take a look at some of the other leading advancements in the study of anatomy and physiology and see what perils it saved us from and what benefits we receive from it today. How would you feel if you went into your Doctor's office and as he was examining you he pressed his ear up against your chest? No doubt you would be mortified, and the Doctor most likely would face sexual charges. Well you can thank the invention of the stethoscope for saving you from that unpleasantness. The method I just described to you, was at one time the only way a physician could listen to a patients heart. To say the least it wasn't the most effective method ,but it was better than nothing. The difficulty with this method was in individuals who were obese. The beating heart could not be detected through the layers of fat. It was this very problem that led a very innovative Doctor by the name of Dr. Laennec, to the discovery of the stethoscope. Of course it has been modernized over the years but still it is one of the most trusted diagnostic instruments available today. If it weren't for this instrument, the many heart arrhythmias that people suffer from would go unnoticed. All the credit goes to the study of the human anatomy and physiology. As we earlier mentioned, being able to know what a persons blood pressure is, can mean saving their life. When you go into your Doctor, and he puts that cuff around your arm that fills with pressure, where you think you arm is going to drop off, is called a Sphygmomanometer, commonly known as a blood pressure monitor. What blood pressure is, is simply the force that the blood exerts on the blood vessel walls. Again the trusty stethoscope proved to be a life saving instrument, when Dr. Korotkoff developed a technique for listening to the sounds of the blood flowing the artery, with the aid of the stethoscope. It led to a way of becoming an extremely accurate method of measuring the blood pressure. The next time you pay a visit to your family physician for your annual checkup, take some time to observe all the instruments he will use during his examination of you. Then think about what would be the consequences if something were wrong in the area where he was examining you, and it couldn't be detected. When I carried out this little exercise at my annual medical checkup I
Slide 2: realized just how fortunate I was, and that ½ hour wait to see the doctor didn't seem to be such a inconvenience after all. In addition I had a whole new respect for the study of human anatomy and physiology. --------------------------------------------------------James Ross is the founder of HumanAnatomyCourse.com http://www.HumanAnatomyCourse.com HumanAnatomyCourse is the awarding winning human anatomy and physiology home study course Discover the easiest way to learn about the human body with over 3000 pages of detailed content and intricate diagrams and illustrations.
