Dyslexia is a neurological condition that affects the ability to perceive, manipulate and interchange written words and letters and the corresponding sounds. Several different types of dyslexia have been identified, investigated, contrasted and otherwise studied. The condition is widely prevalent. As many as one person out of every ten suffers from some form of dyslexia. The bad effects of almost all forms can be compensated for and overcome, but most people with dyslexia are completely unaware of it, just live with it, suffer from it and never take an adult dyslexia test. The focus of study, diagnosis and treatment has been mainly with dyslexia in children. This is understandable since dyslexia first manifests itself as a learning disability. Children beginning to learn are easier to observe in groups and contrast one with another. Also there are many educated professionals dealing with children in the educational process. Parents and educators alike want the children to learn and do well. There are many tests for dyslexia for children, many ways to catch it early. It's harder to get a grown-up to take an adult dyslexia test. But dyslexia has been closely studied only in the past 25 years and mostly in only the last 15 years or so. Those of us who completed our childhood educations earlier were never diagnosed. We did not have knowledgeable professionals who understood dyslexia, its symptoms and effects, working with us. As a result, probably somewhere between 90 and 95% of all adult dyslexics have never been diagnosed. They are unaware that their differences and difficulties with certain aspects of language stem from dyslexia. Probably they were criticized for "inattention" or for "not trying hard enough" or were labeled as "slow learners". They were most likely embarrassed by their disabilities. Maybe ashamed of their inabilities to do what others did. So they developed mechanisms of compensation. They worked around the problem, mostly by avoiding doing things they were not good at. They put their attention elsewhere, and did their best to hide their basic, fundamental problem which was dyslexia. Dyslexia runs in families. Many adults finally took an adult dyslexia test when one of their children, nieces, nephews or cousins was diagnosed with dyslexia. Others note that for some reason they don't seem to read as well as others or sometimes have problems manipulating numbers or
