Thesis Statement: What makes the Marine Corps better than the Army? III. Relevance to Audience: If anyone is interested in joining the Military this will give them the insight to pick the branch that would suit them the best. IV Preview of Points: Boot Camp, Physical Fitness, Mission Transition: Body of Speech: I. 1st Main Point: Boot Camp A. Marine Boot Camp is 13 weeks long. 1. Located at either Parris Island, South Carolina or San Diego, California 2. Marine Boot Camp is built around the premise of every Marine is a rifle man first. B. Army Boot Camp is 9 weeks long 1. Located in either Fort Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina; Fort Knox in Louisville, Kentucky; Fort Leonard Wood in Waynesville, Missouri; Fort McClellan in Anniston, Alabama and fort Sill in Lawton, Oklahoma. 2. Army Boot camp is built around the premise of Military Occupation first. 3. This is why the Army has gotten overrun so many times because men and women were not trained as infantry first. C. Marine Corps Boot Camp is segregated unlike Army Boot camp. The Army combines both women and men for training unless it’s a combat related MOS Transition II. 2nd Main Point: Physical Fitness A. Marine Corps PFT (Physical Fitness Test) Consists of a 3 mile run, pull-ups, and crunches. 1. In order to receive a perfect score you need to complete 20 dead hang pull-ups, 100 Crunches in under 2:00 minutes, and complete the 3 mile run in under 18:00 minutes. 2. However those numbers decrease as a person’s age increases. B. Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) consists of sit-ups, pushups and a 2 mile run
Slide 2: Ritter 2 1. The Army has alternatives to the APFT which are a 2.5 mile walk, 800 yard swim, or a 6.2 mile bike. These are given incase you are injured or unable to complete the run because of a physical ailment. C. These standards are regular Marine Corps and Army standards. 1. Special Forces are held to a much higher standard Transition III. 3rd Main Point: Mission A. Marine Corps Mission has been historically known as “First to Fight.” 1. The Marine Corps has the unique ability to rapidly deploy anywhere around the world within a few days. B. Army’s mission is to fight and win our nation’s wars by providing prompt, sustained land dominance across the full range of military operations and spectrum of conflict in support of combat commanders. 1. The Army is more of an occupational force. 2. The Marines go in and take the land and then the Army attempts to hold it. C. The Marine Corps mission is changing to more of an occupational force also.
Conclusion: Explain how this information can help to make a person make their decision on which branch of the Military they would want to join.
