Many people learn about finding profitable niches online after they have learned how to do many other things related to internet marketing. People backtrack to this subject because it's something that is easily overlooked the first time around. The lure of making money as an internet marketer causes people to rush past the important information and jump straight into the act of trying to sell something. Profitable Niche Research The first step to find a profitable niche market is to do some hands-on research. Find a major website that is selling something relational to what you would like to sell. Amazon and Ebay are good places to start if you are interested in physical products, while Clickbank is good for digital products. Many people are looking to promote products as an affiliate, although these same techniques still apply if you want to sell your own products. These major websites share a decent amount of information that you can use to help find a niche market that is profitable, popular and with relatively low competition. Take a look through some categories to get an idea of what types of items people actually buy. This is a crucial step in the process, because you must target something that people want to buy online. The biggest mistake that most people make is to stay too general. The idea of a niche market is not the same thing as a general category. As an example, internet marketing is a general category, but niche keyword research is a niche in that category. By targeted very specific groups of products and/or services, you can avoid a lot of competition and actually have a chance at success. When you are searching through these sites to find profitable niche markets, start by making a list of possibilities. Come up with some very specific types of products that interest you and others. You want to target popular or top-rated products, but you generally will want to stay away from the absolute best. The most popular products in almost every category are already loaded with competition, so start your search a bit down the list. Keyword Research The next step to finding a profitable niche is to do some keyword research for your niche possibilities. This is where most people start to get confused and frustrated, which is why many people result to paid niche keyword research tools. The truth is that these tools are cheating you, because they give you old results. Keyword
Slide 2: research tools cannot fetch real-time data for every user and every search, so they cache information. This information does get updated each month or so, but you often end up seeing old results at any given time. When you search by hand, you get the most up-to-date data and you can use common sense that keyword tools simply lack. Certain keyword phrases will not be worth your time and an automated research tool will not be able to weed out those bad results. The tools will also present other information that can easily cause you to overlook finding very profitable niches. The best way to conduct your keyword research is with Google's Keyword Tool. When you sign in to an AdWords account, you will be able to get a larger list of results than you can without an account. You don't have to actually advertise on AdWords to have this account, just create an AdWords account. Search through each of your niche possibilities to find popular keyword phrases that you can use to target your niche products. Make sure you select the '[Exact]' checkbox and deselect the 'Broad' checkbox on the left hand side of the page (shows up after you make a keyword search). This will show you how many people have actually searched for that exact phrase, instead of giving you a general number that can be very misleading. You want to have a decent amount of monthly traffic volume for the phrases you target, but you also need to be sure that you will not have too much competition. For this reason, I generally look for phrases with 200-1000 exact keyword monthly searches. During the next step of the keyword research process, you want to take your keyword phrase possibilities and actually perform the search on Google. If "internet marketing" is your keyword phrase, perform this search - all-in-title:"internet marketing". Pay attention to the number of results that you receive from the search. You want to find phrases that have less than 10,000 results for the "all-in-title" phrase search. The lower this number is, the lower the competition for that keyword phrase. Your ultimate goal with finding profitable niches is to find niche products that are popular with keyword phrases that have a decent amount of traffic and low competition. When you can find a niche market that meets these guidelines, you will have yourself a profitable niche.
