She walked along the shore alone, her sandals in one hand. The cool waves tickled her feet as she stepped lightly into the edge of each wave.Josh watched her approaching. Her long legs were shapely and strong. The cool ocean breeze pressed her shirt against her body showing her deep curves.Feeling his eyes on her, Peggy looked up to find Josh squarely in her path. He was very tall with dark wavy hair and deep eyes. His body was muscular but lean. He smiled when their eyes met, but Peggy darted her eyes away. It was too soon. She had just ended another long relationship that had turned from passionate love to adversarial stalemate.Thoughts rushed through her head."I just can't get involved yet. I'm not ready to accept another failure. What should I do? How can I avoid him?"Peggy stopped suddenly and was about to turn away from him when he spoke."Hi there. Care to sit and watch the sunset? I was hoping for some company.""What sad eyes," Josh thought. "She is way to lovely to have such sad eyes.""I was going to...I need to go."Her mind racing, Peggy tried to make an excuse to leave. But she also wanted to watch the dance of passionate colors that the sunset would soon create..Josh walked over to Peggy as she hesitated. He felt her doubt."It won't hurt to just watch, will it?"He took her hand and pulled her to the sand. They sat and watched, waiting for the sun to dip below the horizon.Josh and Peggy sat on the sand waiting for the sun to set. She had pulled her hand away from his after sitting next to him on the sand. Josh looked at her intently but Peggy eluded his eyes."I'm Josh. I, uh, well, I like to come and watch the sunset."He waited for a response but none came."So, what's your name?""Peggy." She sighed heavily and wanted to be alone."Look, I...""Please..."They both spoke at once. He caught her eye but she looked away quickly."What were you going to say?" Josh asked her."It's just, I wanted to be alone. I just wanted to think.""Shall I go?"She hesitated and did not respond right away. Josh started to move as if he were going to get up."No. Don't go."Josh relaxed. He took Peggy's hand and laid it on his arm, holding it there gently. They turned their attention to the sky as it turned crimson and gold, then lavender and purple. They watched until the colors had all cooled and the sky was shades of deepening blue."Can I buy you a Starbuck's? It's getting cold." Peggy looked at him. His face was handsome but not perfect. She liked that. His eyes were deep and dark. As he stood he pulled her up. He was tall, about 6'2", and strong. Peggy felt a tug at her heart."There's a Starbuck's just down the street. Shall we walk?"Peggy nodded. They walked together silently. Josh was feeling awkward."So, you live around here?""Yes."Peggy didn't want to tell him she lived on the beach in a lovely house. She didn't want him to know how rich she was.
Slide 2: That knowledge had attracted the wrong kind of men."What about you? Do you live around here?" "Yeah. I just bought a new house near the lagoon.""Oh! On the south side? That's an expensive area.""No kidding. But my company is doing well and I wanted a place where I could eventually have a family."Peggy's heart skipped a beat. She let him talk about his company, his life, his failures. By the time they arrived at Starbuck's, she was feeling hopeful. After coffee Josh walked Peggy home. She lived on the beach just two blocks from the village."Thanks for the coffee, Josh." "Can I see you tomorrow? Same time and place, you know, sunset?""Okay."Peggy went through the gate and into her house, then closed the door. She watched as Josh walked away. She felt that dreamy feeling again but this time she stopped it. She was not going down another fast path to heartache again. This time she would be more sensible and cautious.Josh walked to his car and drove home. He had wanted an invitation into Peggy's house but he could see the restraint on her face and heard the hesitation in her voice."Geez, she's really cute. Somebody really did a number on her."Josh shook his head as he thought about her. He looked forward to their next meeting and hoped she would show up.The next day Peggy walked down the beach to meet Josh. She looked down the beach but did not see him."Maybe I'm early."Peggy knew she wasn't early. She continued walking down the beach when someone came up behind her and touched her shoulder. Peggy spun around, ready to beat off her assailant and found herself looking into Josh's smiling face."Hi! Did I scare you?""Yes! And you almost got slugged."They both laughed lightly. Josh slid his arm around her as they turned to walk together. Peggy did not withdraw, leaning into him instead."So, how was your day? What did you do? You haven't talked much about yourself."Josh was curious to find out how she could afford a house on the beach."I'm a writer. I write all kinds of books under all kinds of names.""Really? Wow! Will you write about me?""Oh, yes, I'm sure I will." The sunset did not disappoint them and was glorious once again.
