During the 1940s you have World War II, the Holocaust, but creativity coming from everywhere. “It was the best of times it was the was the worst of times”, quote from (It's a Wonderful Life and six million Jewish deaths) The 50s bring on the Cold War with the Soviet Union, the golden age of television, and new music such as jazz swing, and rock n roll. These things had a major influence of the time. The 1960s brought the Vietnam War,Civil rights movement, and the term “Groovy”. This was an age of rebellion from lies told in past decades. During the 70s there was the Watergate scandal with president Nixon, and the explosion of Disco later on in the decade. It was all about expressing your self through clothes, song, and dance.
Slide 3: People that influenced Fashion The 30s were influenced by new fabrics and the female form. The 40s were influenced by patriotism and war clothing. The 50s had fashion idols like singer Elvis Presley, and film star Marilyn Monroe. The 60s fashion idols were models like Twiggy and the stylish Jackie Kennedy. The 70s fashion influences came from Disco and foreign designs.
Slide 4: The 1930 silhouettes were softer, often with flared skirts. The 40 silhouettes were regulated and was balanced with big-brimmed hats, very military inspired. The silhouettes of the 1950s discreetly celebrated the female figure. And the silhouettes of the 60s were more form fitting. The 70s silhouettes were more of a time less style and more lady like, going back towards the 50s style. And at the same time exaggerated the proportions of the human body. Silhouettes of the period
Slide 5: Designers and Labels Adrian was a designer in the 40s that designed for Joan Crawford, his style really took hold after America entered WWII. He designed this beaded crepe cocktail dress. Norman Norell was a designer during the 60s. He designed this bubblegum-pink double knit dress. This style was very popular during the time. Malcolm Starr produced impeccable, elegant fashion during the 1960s and 1970s. His designs were found in up-scale department stores such as this evening dress.
Slide 6: Trends in Fashion at the time Well in the 50s trends In the 30s they favored long dresses, down to their ankles and more simple fabrics. came from Hollywood, outfits, jewellery worn by the most popular screen idols were worn by every day people. The 70s had the bell bottoms, huge afros, platform shoes and you can’t forget about the Dashiki. Skimming mini dresses and skirts were a big trend in the 60s, because before then 50s fashion was still in. The 40s trends were broad shoulders and just below the knee skirts, also very simple.
Slide 7: Colors that were popular  The colors used in the 30s were very muted, because you have to remember during this time you had The Great Depression. In the 40s you began to see a lot of floral prints and simple color pallets like blue, red and white ,very similar to the colors in the America flag, because people were very patriotic during this time.In the 1950s, color films made an enormous impact on cosmetics. The huge cinema screens illuminated the unblemished appearance of stars it helped create the 1950s glamour. In the 60s they weren’t focused so much on colors but prints most every print was vibrant, psychedelic beautiful fabric prints. The 70s much like the 60s brought in psychedelic prints that were very colorful, their influences for these colors came from foreign influences.
Slide 8: Textiles used Metallic, beading, lace, velvet, silk, and woven fabrics like wool were used in all of the decades mentioned. The only difference was the amount and how they used it. In the 50s and 60s they used it more on dresses and blouses were as in the 40s and 40s they used in there coats, shawls, and accessories. The 70s had more of these textiles in there dresses as well ecspescially velvet.
Slide 9: Films of the 50s,30s & 70s Rebel Without a Cause is a great representation of the 50s. A film that sympathetically views rebellious,American restless, misunderstood, middleclass youth. You have Tarzan the Ape Man,the first feature-length talking version of Tarzan series in the 30s. In the 70s you have the creation of black exploidtation films such as Coffee and Superfly.
Slide 10: Clothing parallels made to other time periods  50s clothes parallels can be made to other time periods especially the 60s. 50s fashion hangs on until 1966,just as in the 1920s for half a decade clothes still showed signs of belonging to the late fifties. Before the mini dress in the 60s was the straight shift, which had developed from the 1957 sack dress, which was still well below the knee. You also have pleated skirts in the early 60s that was worn in the late 50s because it was easier to dance the twist.
Slide 11: A clothing parallel between the 50s & 60s 1950s 1960s
