Growing up in Morocco, I was influenced by three languages. French, Spanish and Arabic. The language we speak in Morocco is a dialect that combines French and Arabic while our neighbors to the North, Spain spoke Spanish. I remember as a very young person being able to get the signal from Spanish television stations over the Strait of Gilraltar into my bedroom in Rabat and watching the people speak and copying what they said so that I could learn the language. I have always loved languages and was fortunate to learn three languages at a very young age. There is something to be said about training your tongue to speak different languages when you are young. In the United States, languages are taught in high school so that the basic grammar can be learned and some conversational skills can be developed but most students aren't sure why they should learn a language. The saying is "Why, I will never need it!" As people get older, they find they want to travel, or they move to another country or they have need to speak another language to work with their companies biggest clients. The saying goes "You can't teach an old dog new tricks." but people can definitely learn a new language at any age. Like anything though you need to commit yourself to learning by stepping outside your comfort zone and but a system in place for you to learn the language you want to learn. Here are 3 other things that you can do to help you along to learn any new language: 1) A good system - A good system starts with either a classroom training through a local adult education center or cultural diversity center. 2) Repetition - Professional Football players spend hours sharpening their skills kicking the ball on the field. If you watched the World Cup, you could see that dribbling is like breathing for them. They always set aside time to practice. In order to learn a new language you will need to set aside time each day to get repetition in learning your new language. Some things you can do to get that repetition in is to listen and repeat or find a person to practice with. Other things you can do is read news papers and watch TV shows that speak the language you are learning much like I did in Morocco. 3) Play games - When you are a child, parents play games with their children to help them remember. Who doesn't play the game where an adult says "where is your eye" and the child points to the eye or "where is your belly" and the child pulls up their shirt? Start playing these games again with yourself (minus the pulling up the shirt ladies) and you can be well on your way
Slide 2: to learning a new language. Some people are naturals at learning languages some others take more time. You learned at least one if you are reading this article so I am sure you can learn another language when you make the decision to do it.
